please help - anyone who has done Chemistry????
ok...havent been on here in a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time....but i REALLY need some help!!!
i am doing my AS Chemistry coursework and i dont understand the tests at all.
basically i need someone to explain how to do 2 tests to me.
we have an unknown acid, MHSO4 - where M is either sodium or potassium.
we need to prove that it is an acid through 2 chemical tests WITHOUT using indicators.
test 1 will be using acid + limewater which will turn milky with carbon dioxide.
test 2 will be using a acid + metal which will emit Hydrogen.
i dont know how to actually DO these tests at all...ie; what to do, what equipment to use, etc.
i also dont know why the emission of CO2 and H prove that the acid is an acid - i think its something to do with the donating of H+ ions...but i really dont know.
if anyone can help out a thick muppet.....i will be VERY VERY VERY grateful!!!!

Test tube with a holed bung. Glass tube through the bung in to another container with the lime water. End of glass tube goes in to the lime water so any gas given off bubbles through the limewater. Put the liquid in test tube 1. You seem to be missing a reactant for this, I assume a nice base would be used to generate the C02.
The metal hydrogen one is similar except the collection vessel is upturned with the tube below, the hydrogen rises and displaces the air. Test for H2 with the pop-test.

I am not about to explain acid / base chemistry, that's O'level (showing my age) stuff. Do a search on the internet for reactions between CaCO3 and acids or acid / base reactions and also with metals, there is plenty of stuff out there.

Well, adding an acid, eg Sulphuric acid, to a carbonate, such as calcium carbonate, causes the formation of a salt. In this case, calcium sulphate. There are 2 Hydrogen ions left over, plus a calcium and three oxygen. The two hydrogens link up with an oxygen to make water, leaving a carbon and two oxygens.-CO2. This bubbles through the limewater (which is a saturated solution of Calcium hydroxide) and results in the formation of the insoluble salt Calcium carbonate. Which is why it goes cloudy.
I cannot be arsed to explain the acid one, sexy though you purport to be.

What Olly said!
Plus you will need to dissolve your MHSO4 in water first assuming you are supplied it in powder or granular form because when you add NaHSO4 or KHSO4 to water it makes dilute sulphuric acid.

I recall Acid + Base = Salt + Water
HCl + NaOH = NaCl + H2O
Easier to show if you use HCl as your acid:
2HCl + CaCO3 = CO2 + H2O + CaCl2
2HCl + Fe2 = 2FeCl + H2
p.s. How was the boarding? A little birdie tells me someone injured their shoulder?
p.p.s. Don't listen to me - I only got a C at Chemistry

I haven't done Chemistry, I'm only early (ok mid!) -20's and I don't feel the need to be honest. I'm not quite that desperate yet!
Oh, sorry, I thought you meant the speed dating event for sad people who can't get dates without meeting up with other desperate losers!
(Ok I admit it, I have been once! (Ok twice, but that time was just to keep someone company if they didn't score))
