Should Blair have returned home early.
Why are the papers, news etc saying that Blair should have returned home early from his holiday in Egypt.
Personally I cant stand the man or what he stands for but isnt he as much as the rest of us allowed to spend just some of his time with his family. After all he probably works more hours than most in what must be I would imagine a very stressful job.

whilst i cant stand the git, and i welcome any chance to get rid of him, on this ocassion will defend him.
Him coming back would make no difference whatsoever- the man is as entitled to a holiday over xmas as anyone else.
Cant see a problem with that
Once again, trial by media

Wouldn't have made any difference in a practical sense, but Blair IS the Prime Minister. With this comes certain responsibilities. One of these is leadership. Whether it is just a question of being 'seen' to do the right thing is open to debate.
The concept of leadership appears to be lost on our dear PM.

Chris L summed it up for me too. Funny how every other European leader (as far as was reported) managed to break their holiday to be seen at the helm....
Oh, and wasn't it Bush as well who didn't come home either..?? May be wrong on that one ...

Criticism and condemnation sell papers and attracts viewers. Fact
Support and condoning actions doesn't
All he needs is a phone, laptop and videolink and he do whatever he need wherever he is. It's not as if it's the dark ages and he needs to be at number 10 everytime somebody farts (admittedly it was a little more than fart this time, but non the less )
And I can't stand the bloke either - his wife would probably do a better Job!

I can hardly think of anyone who would do a worse job.
(agree though with the "damned if he does, damned if he doesn't" comments)
No doubt there were a load of Foreign Office people not very far away from him and that there was a satellite phone and email available - which says that it was hardly a holiday when he's on duty all the time.

Can see no reason at all why he should come back early. Didnt he just have a heart scare and some surgery to correct it, albiet minor surgery. I should think he is entitled to an uninterrupted break away from the daily pressures of running a country and dreaming up new schemes to leech unclebuck and the awkward squad.
Only time he should return is a threat to the nation or the death of the Queen.

Yes he should have come back, he is the Prime Minister and the responsibility goes with the job. He's done similar things in the past.
This is the worst disaster and he sits sunning himself?
As far as the best leader, well taxes are at an all time high, and rising, identity cards threaten to remove your ability to go where you please without having to prove who you are. Persecution of motorists both by tax and fines is raging on, including the work they are doing to introduce car tagging. Crime is at an all time high, more kids are missing school than ever before. Massive reduction in the Armed Forces, immigration is also at a record high, illegal immigration is higher than legal immigration. We have the worst health service in the developed world.
Cant exactly think of any thing he could be proud of......

Totally agree with r32.
He is the pm and should have returned or at least made a statement from his 'working holiday.' Can you imagine what he would have done if it was america??? he would have been there in a flash. For somebody so media savvy he has dropped a monumental boll*ck, to say he didn't realise the magnitude of the tragedy says it all.
Perhaps he was writing his wish list for diners to chequers at our expense - geri halliwell again ???? wtf??
I think he has really disappointed his loyal band of followers because they hang on his every word and would have been waiting for instruction on how to react a la his 'people's princess' speech. (Remember the queen getting slaughtered for her silence and not coming back off her holiday ?? - then forced to grovel) imho there's no comparison to which constitutes the greater need for the county's leader to say a few words. i think that psychologically the public expected it and i just hope that teflon tone is seen as the self-serving, lying, manipulative, condesending pr*ck that he IS.
Even people in sharm-el-sheik on holiday were surprised he was still there - they thought they might be able to move around freely instead of having to stop for his cavalcade every half hour!!

There are 2 points that caught my eye:
1 - Blair was the only EU leader NOT to cut their holiday short.
2 - This is the first time Blair has had to shell out of his own pocket for his holiday.
Go figure....

This was not a threat to Britain, and anyway, things were handled well enough. Had he come back, he'd have been acused of pandering to the media. He didn't, and he's beaing accused of not caring.
It's all a bit reminiscent of the Queen not coming back from holiday after idiot-woman got killed in Paris; what was she supposed to do, fly out and pick up the body?

Practically speaking it probably made no difference, especailly with those two stars Prescott and Straw running it all!
However, these days, politicians and politicking is all about posturing and photo opportunities and being seen to act as a concerned leader. I use the word "act" advisedly. Far more important than actually achieving very much as we have seen for a few years now.
He should have returned and with a bit of luck his reputation will drop even further.
