How about 'Hong Kong Garden' by Siouxsie and the Banshees; 'New Rose' by The Damned and 'Ever Fallen in Love...' by The Buzzcocks?

Has to be the Sex Pistols from the summer of 1976 to early 1997. The whole sense of chaos they created was unprecedented. No one else caused as much mayhem. Being a punk around jubilee time was a risky business. I remember cutting my hair and dyeing it orange. Plenty of dodgy looks, and the odd fight or two. Sadly I never saw them live. Closest I got was seeing John Lydon in PIL in '78 or '79. Still got all the original vinyl including Anarchy in the UK on EMI, and God Save the Queen on A & M.
Saw all the others who were all damn fine. Loved the first Clash album, and bits of the later ones. Followed the Banshees around for a while. Got more into them around the time of JuJu in 81.

Where's the option for 'none of the above'?
The best punk band was clearly the one I was in - Crisis.

If the criteria is "the greatest original British punk band" then it's the Pistols, no questions. They were the inspiration for Strummer to leave his pub rock band and help form the Clash, the inspiration for the Buzzcocks, etc etc.
Also "Bollocks" is simply a classic album. Even their 'b' sides are awesome -- play "Satellite" or "Did You No Wrong" .... most bands would have songs of that quality as the cornerstone of their reputation, for the Pistols they were just b-sides.
A quick vote for Slaughter and the Dogs, and Wire too

Those darn anarchists who have record contracts and turn up to gigs and write and release songs and live off royalties etc.
Bit young at the time but I guess the pistols were probably central in the scene although the Clash seemed to be far more competent musically but having said that I'm not a great fan of the punk music, some is all right but I do have a soft spot for Rock the Casbah, God save the queen, basically a few of the more tuneful singles etc.

The saddest thing about british punk was the death of Sid Vicious. This was made worse by the fact that he could not be buried for nearly 2 weeks as the bin men were on strike at the time.

I really liked the Stranglers, me. And all the other original punk bands, but I couldn't stand Sham, Abrasive wheels, Exploited, or any of the other OI-type shoite that wouldn't recognise a tune if it was wearing a ripped tee-shirt with "I'm a TUNE you c*nt" painted on it.

The Ramones and the Dead Kennedys were New Wave Pete: in fact; all of the bands mentioned are New Wave; with the exception of 'The Stranglers' whom I forgot to include.
I did use the word 'original' initially but I altered it because the 'Sex Pistols' were arguably the original punk band. I wanted to include all of the first punk bands who were formed by the middle/end of 1977.
Its got to be 'The Clash' for me; you acknowledge the 'Pistols but you listen to 'White Riot' !

Yup, Ramones were Punk - but were the Clash and the Pistols? not according to Rat Scabies.....
Damned get's my vote, I've got just about everything they ever did on vinyl and just got a new record deck for Christmas Saw the Damned again in Aberdeen last year - still pretty good, bit stunned when I saw the keyboard player, she looked just like a typical middle aged mum
Another big favourite of mine were the Vibrators - first song on the new deck was 'Pure Mania' with the V2 at the start.
Generation X and Billy Idol were pretty damned good with their first album.
Sham 69 started off as Punk then drifted into the right wing bovver boot scene.

Well, Rat has the distinction of his band being the first to release a punk single, so he's taking that as proving his right to say who was and who wasn't, I suppose...
I'm 42, by the way... who else was around at the time?

I was still in a punk covers band (semi pro) up till three years ago, and I did a month or two with another outfit in the summer... my stuff fits better now than it did for twenty years owing to a fitness and weight-loss regime...
