Sky digital Freezing images!
Hi all,
Having some annoying problems with picture freezing + loss of sound on certain channels... Some channels are fine while the others are unwatchable!
Signal strength and signal quality are both around 3/4 or more....
Can any body help?
Cheers,
Plums.

I had this a while back and found it was down to a plant pot holder sitting on our balcony just in front of the dish. Removed the "blockage" and hey presto! back came Sky again. No problems with the weather at the moment so it's not that...
You tried calling the guys from Jim's Mini Market? Probably won't do a call out today but if you get stuck...

Just found this - Digibox Easter Egg - dunno if it works or not but it might be worth a shot resetting the 'box.

There's also an option for a full system reset in the System Setup menu if you have Sky+ (the above link is probably for Sky not Sky+ as I just tried the easter egg and it didn't work on my Sky+ box)

Thanks for the link will give it a go....
If all else fails then I guess Jims it is then!
You wouldn't happen to know if I can use my Skycard in someone else's box would you?
Big thanks,
Plums.

Signal strength varies depeding on the channel your watching.
Some channels are tranmistted on the weaker Astra satellite, whilst others are on the stronger one.
Simply put....under certain conditions you'll lose some channels, but others will be ok.
The "signal strength/qulaity" meters are very averaged and not wholly accurate - you can have crap signal strength - yet the metre will still show 80%
Things to check - dish alignment and obstruction. Otherwise it's possible your LNB could be on it's way out (they tend to lose a few channels before dying completely). A fault with the reciever can also cause this, but is less likely. Also check the cabling and connections...you never know, a rat may have taken a liking to chewing the cable

Yes, I think you can use your card in someone else's digibox, shouldn't be a problem. I think that with Sky+ the card is somehow tied to the box.

Rats Eeeeeek don't tell the wife!
Cheers,

AFAIK yes, you can just swap out the decoder but it might be worth double-checking on the 'net first. The Digital Spy forums usually have useful information for people in our situation.

You can swap the cards...but it may only allow you view the freeview channels (BBC ITV etc).
I think it depend where the sky boxes were sourced...If they were supplied by SKY (or sky approved installer) under the "free box" or other discount package. The cards full channel function will only work with the sky box supplied with it.
However, it the box was bought new without a card at the full price (no installation package, no free box or discount). It should accept and show all the channels on any viewing card. Although it can depend on the supplier/installer.

you can swop the cards but all you wil get is BBC1 and 2! you access the cards serial number through he menus and then phone them up to set it
I complained becuase they said it would take 2 hours and the wife would kill me if she missed House Doctor,so they gave me the engineer set over the phone!

Plums! I got my setup through the guys at Jim's so if what Ali-B is saying is right, the amount I paid (enough to support a small country for a week or two ) suggests that all the channels should show through it with your card. I still have my "old" digibox which I used for about 9 months before getting Sky+, so if you need a second box to test out whether or not your 'box is at fault rather than the LNB just let me know.

Sky+ will set you back a nice round 1,000 euros - and they didn't want to trade in my 9 month old digibox against the new Sky+ box so I've held on to it hoping to either sell it on or use it with multi-room (haven't bothered doing that so far).
I can't complain about the service and wouldn't want to be without Sky as the French/Swiss TV offerings are awful (how many times can you watch Colombo ???) but it would be nice if the price was a bit easier on my wallet ! Captive market I suppose.

I've tried everything....
The reset worked on my box but didn't remove the freezing...
No weasel or rat bites which is nice.... I guess?
Moved dish and am getting a rather pleasing 90% Signal strength and 80-85% signal quality I was a bit chuffed with that!
Bugger all has changed if anything it's probably worse.... sob!
Spoke to a guy apparently in the know who reckons is gonna be the LNB on it's way out... I'll change it tomorrow....
STi-Frenchie If all else fails I may be interested in buying your box provided my card will work in it of course! Let me know how much you would be willing to accept
Thanks for all the advice,
Plums.
P.S. I'll let you know how I get on.

Sorry to hear it's still not working for you Plums! - it does sound as if it could be the LNB and luckily those are cheap as chips to replace. If it's not that and it turns out to be the box, I'd be looking for 250 euros (cost me 700 from Dick Turpin & co.) if it all works with your card.
Keep us posted and good luck !

Changed the LNB last night....
Nope no luck!
Now I'm guessing it can only be the decoder?
STi-Frenchie would it be O.K. to try before I buy yours?
Cheers, Plums.

IIRC when I met up with Plums he told me that there was a lot of construction work going on quite close to him so the cranes may have been interfering with the signal.
