OK, I don't work there now, but I used to work in Sainsburys a fair while ago (10 years plus). I was getting at least £3.50 an hour I believe, which was not too shabby for a 16 year old that didn't actually do much, apart from use the shark's for hand puppets to scare the kids (was a fishmonger, loads of fun, re-enacting star wars with salmon instead of lightsabers lol)
As for the shifts, well, depends on the store and what they have available, and how flexible you are. I worked on a Friday night and Saturday afternoon until closing. You'll find there will probably be a fair few jobs around at the moment as the seasonal staff will have grabbed the cash and be out of there in a flash.
Would I work there again? at 30? umm, no, I'd prefer not to. I'd rather deal with traffic wardens than have to put up with the jumped up management types you find in supermarkets.
I do enjoy popping back in and seeing the jumped up little arselickers, sorry, managment, types who are still there, 10+ years on. One of the smug gits thought he'd got one over on me, as I went in there looking like a tramp (heck, I did have a hangover the size of Oslo) and he thought I'd fallen on hard times. I simply said I was rather trashed after a bit of a session the night before, as my friends had not seen me since I moved to Canada to work. He seemed upset that my title of Technical Manager
was a tad grander than his, and that I'd been flying around the US for the best part of four years. Hmm, whose the cocky git now then mr produce manager, stuff a carrot up your ****.
As for Macca's not sure I know anyone who does, but my friend used to be a manager years ago. As for why you'd work there, umm, money perhaps? Yes, I'm very elitiest and I'd do nearly anything to avoid working in Maccas or any fast food place, but, push come to shove, if I needed the money, I'd work there.

The garage is open all the way through.
Looks like it varies from store to store.

I work 3 evenings a week at B&Q at the moment - 8pm through to midnight and pay works out at just over £6 per hour(ish)...
Basic pay is only £4.92 but the night premium bumps it up a little after 10. If you're prepared to work weekends then pay is a little better too.
It's hardly brilliant but I don't think you'll find anywhere is that different

If you do night-shift it will be a bit more about £7ish i imagine.
I actually got told i wasnt suitable for one of these jobs despite having 4 a-levels, previous experience with the company and a glowing reference from my last job at the previous store! LMAO!! Still dont know why!

Pay at retailers generally the same, between £5-£6 per hour during the day, depending on where you work(ie skilled bakers earn more than a produce assistant). The majority of filling is done at night, and night premiums will push wage up by another £1-£2 depending on what time you work, plus the location of the store. But dont forget the benefits which many firms offer which will add value on top of your monthly/yearly pay, such as pensions, share bonuses(very good at Tesco, not so good at Sainsburys!!) staff discount on food and insurance etc, subsided meals, free uniform, paid holiday and more. Job security plus career development is another big plus with Tesco if that is important to you.
