Default Free Mobile phone with contract

Hello

I don't really understand why the mobile phone providers give away mobile phones. It would be much easier if they gave the option to just reduce the rental instead.

My wife just signed up with Vodafone: 12 month contract, £35 per month and received an SL65 for free. Looking at E-bay, we will get somewhere around £180 for it. Much easier to reduce the monthly fee by £15.

You may find this hard to believe, but the phone company has no interest at all in saving your money - only in maximising their own. Does that help answer your question?

Hello

But it's not about that. They retail price is £300, they must pay around £150. So it is not saving them money.

I got an Orange SPV-C500 a few months back. Phone was free, £50 credit applied to my account, £25 per month rental.

Sold the phone on eBay for £250 within a week, add the credit and I've got free phone calls for a year .

it's not free, your paying £35 a month for it so it's actually over £400.

There is no such thing as 'line rental'! Assume whatever tariff your on means they give you xxx minutes texts. Which cost x + the phone cost y. = much less than £400.

I would prefer the rental to be lower then I'd be tempted back to vodafone or such, but, in today's market place it's better to have product a, (i.e. the contract) with free products b,c,d,and e to make it look more impressive. PC's are the same on high street, still cost a grand but you get xxxx free (or included in the priceas I see it).

Yep exactly Matt, I work for a telco and we have just started offering mobile phones, the fact is yes some handsets are £300+ but we get a kickback on new contracts and can then lose the rest of the cost in line rental. As said most of the cost of line rental is to offer a 'bundle' which looks attractive but normally ends up costing the consumer more, we want to go to market with a straight £10 a month line rental offer and pay for what you use but everyone we have spoken to wants a bundle, its crazy!!!

I was amazed at the deal my wife got with Vodafone: £35 per month, SL65, 350 cross network minutes, 500 texts and free weekend calls.

The only one that was better was the "doesn't work in my house" 3.
