Unhappy Tonsils

Had mine out on Tuesday. Bloody Hell. Oh well, suppose I'll never get tonsilitus again, but surely it's going to get better! Feel like sh1te.

Had it done at my local private hospital and they were excellent! Top class service, they really know how to make you feel as comfortable as possible. So glad I didn't go through the NHS now.

They have given me some nice tablets which mean absolutely NO alcohol whatsoever. I was told to even watch out for brandy butter or sherry trifle as even a small amount can make me seriously sick.

Anyone else had theirs out? How long does the pain last?

Pain lasts couple of weeks.

Check what the antibiotic is: if it's metronidazole, then absolutely no alcohol, or you'll vomit more than you've ever vomited before.

If it's penicillin/erythromycin/flucloxacillin, then alcohol doesn't make a blind bit of difference - it's just something we tell people to spoil their day.

Although all of these can stop the contraceptive pill working

Yep, it's that one I don't actually feel like drinking right now, but I was hoping I'd feel better by new year. I wouldn't like to think what damage being sick would do to my throat right now!

Thanks, I am hoping I will feel better, it's the tiredness that's doing me in right now, and er, not being able to speak

Do you get a fever and flu symptoms as well as the sore throat? This is the reason I decided to have mine out as I wouldn't be able to do anything for about a week except lay in bed halluncinating and wailing! Horrible illness.

I will let you know next week if I recommend having them out, but I would say so if your tonsilitus is lasting 3 weeks!

iirc getting your tonsils out doesn't mean you won't get tonsilitus again...it just means that the risk of your throat closing up is less.
When I was younger I used to have to go to hospital when I had tonsilitus because my throat closed up so much I could barely breathe...my parents asked them to take them out, but they said that I'll still get tonsilitus only I'll be a bit safer.

clare , you have to eat some dry toast as soon as you can so that the infected bits get scraped off and broken down in you tummy........

i had mine out on the tuesday and then went out for a few beers and then someone handed me a chilli vodka ........that seared my throat and cleaned them up in now time at all - however i did leap over tha bar and eat an ice bucket !!! was bloody funny now looking back at it - but i can assure you it wasn't at the time.

hope you get better soon - a few bears wont harm just stop taking the pills as b4 hand !

Thanks Matt & everyone

I had beans on toast fairly soon after the op. Wasn't too bad, don't think I could have stomached dry toast though. Am on fairly normal food, but have cravings for beans and eggs for some reason.

Did the doctors explain about any side-effects of having them out which may manifest themselves later in life?

I had terrible tonsilitus about a month ago, and was on antibiotics and about a dozen painkillers a day just to be able to eat and sleep. I was chatting to someone at work and said if it came back I'd like to have them out, but he said he thought that doctors would rarely remove them nowadays because of possible consequences down the line.

Gary.

Not problems later on, its cos the older you are, the bigger the risk of taking them out, they try to avoid taking them out once you reach puberty.

Don't feel too sorry for yourself
I had mine out on 01/09/1999......the day my DBM MY99 scooby arrived after a 9 month wait!
I collected the car, drove it home (10 miles), got a lift into hospital, had the op, and was then told to stay indoors for the next 2 weeks to avoid infection etc. You can't believe how hard it was to watch the dust collect on my brand spanking new scooby as I waited until I was fit for a proper drive.
However, I did sneak out and fire her up a few times
Now, THAT is harsh........

They haven't told me not to drive for 2 weeks. However, the pain relief they've given me does cause drowsiness - Bloody too right, having real difficulty keeping my eyes open most of the day.

Am not going to leave the house until next week though which will do my wallet some good

Yeah, suppose so, but it's great, I've got out of getting the shopping for dinner and everything! Saved me a fortune being asleep 20 hours a day
