Returning goods/ My rights?

Returning goods/ My rights?
Bought a Matsui DVD recorder from Curry’s today as a Christmas present, got it home and set it all up......
What a pile of **** it turns out to be, not at all happy with it, very user unfriendly and the remote doesn’t work to well, you have to really push down hard on the buttons to get it to work.
So I wana take it back and get a full cash refund on it but the receipt says that the product must be Unopened/ Unused which it isn’t.
So where do I stand?
Can I expect a full refund?
What should my approach be as I don't want to be fobbed off by them...

They don't have to change it as actually nothing wrong with it. Most firms nowadays just change things anyway as they can't be bothered with all the hassle of refusing. At least think of a good excuse, not that it is user unfriendly They'll just think you're thick

Take out the fuse and tell them it's broken. If they don't give you your money back, they may give you a brand new one in a box. DO NOT open this one and go to a different store.
