PS2 gamers advice needed please

Have been tasked by mission control to buy nephew a PS2 game for Xmas.

Is there any difference between the "platinum" labelled games and the originals (other than price)?

Nope, the platinum are reissues of older titles at a budget price. They'll work fine but he'll know you're a cheapskate

no difference.

only that they're the older titles. when they've been out a while and nobody will buy them for £40, they're "platinum"d and dropped to £20
