Moral Dilemma
Having a bit of trouble with this one.
If you knew (and could evidence) that someone had either lead, or had an active role in, the shafting of someone else (metaphorically speaking) by way of an abuse of their position and relationships, would you tell that individual who suffered as a result?
I have no particluar allegiance to the "wronged party", however the use/abuse of position for what appears to be somewhat petty reasons does not sit well with me.
Any thoughts and reasoning?

I doubt that anyone can help you with this; there are too many variables; ideally youd like to do the decent thing; but itd be sensible to weigh up the sense of enourmous well-being on the one hand, and the **** hitting the fan on the other!
Is this anything to do with ScoobyNet.....?

How much of an allegiance do you have with the perpetrator? If it's a mate I'd be inclined to have a go at them. If there's not much allegiance then tell the wronged party.
All depends on the situation of course and what's actually happened. Can only guess from what you've posted. Can you give more details?
Or do what most people do these days........nothing.

i would tell them, i think.
difficult call and depends on ramafications (sp?)
if someone lost their job over it, or hard earned money, or their partner then yes, they must know.
if it cost them a written warning and a slap on the wrist then maybe keep schtum.

Depends on whether the wronged party will benefit from this information; if there's no obvious comeback, they'll just be left feeling bitter.
Did the wronged party actually realise they'd been shafted at all? I'm thinking that perhaps they didn't get the promotion they were hoping for, but didn't realise that it wasn't a fair selection process, that sort of thing.

What would I do? well, If I knew both parties involved, let's say the shafter was a friend, I'd have a word, without a doubt. If I did not know the shaftee (as it were) then I'd possibly not tell them, depends, if my mate said "they deserved it" then I'd be slightly more inclined to inform the wrong party. I'm no saint, but I don't overly like those who seem to enjoy shafting people.
If I did not care about the shafter, but knew the shaftee, hell yeah I'd tell them, give them all the evidence and sit back and watch what happens.

More details really required me thinks, but yeah I'd generally say any abuse of position used to the detriment of someone else should be slapped down hard. Most abuses of position are the same as abuses of power. Power Corrupts - Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely etc. Slap the power happy maniacs down off their lofty position now, before they fall and hurt someone

It sounds like the power has gone to the shafters head and needs bringing down a peg or two. Partly knowing (or percieving to know) your character (only off SN of course) and you posting the question requesting advice is obviously troubling you somewhat.
I think if you were the shaftee and looked at it from that angle, would YOU want to know what went on...................... i know i would.
Morality is the key, forget personal gain but then again by the sounds of it you have nothing to gain. Put it another way, you have done nothing about it so far and it troubles you to the extent of asking for peoples opinions so this doesn't, as you put it "sit well". The only other option is to tell the shaftee now, you will feel better in the long run and no matter how malicious the event was the shaftee will at very least respect you for it and the shafter will need to re-think their objectives.

If it does not sit well with you then i think you have answered your own question.
You have to tell the person that is suffering... personally speaking of course.

Do unto others as you would have done unto you.
If somebody had shafted me I'd love to know so I could decide what to do about it. On this basis, if I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, somebody else had been shafted then I would tell them.
However, I don't advocate "grassing" or "telling tales", it would have to be something serious such as career, family, financial etc.
At the end of the day it is down to you. Which one keeps your conscience clear, keeping quiet or saying something?
Are you going to tell us what your concern is so we may make a more informed decision?
Do you know who killed JFK????
Did David Blunkett REALLY fast track the visa application????

It's about time a few people started standing up and doing the right thing tbh. This country is going to the dogs and apathy is as much a contributor as anything else.
Do the right thing Diablo, you know you ought to.
That's not to say the right thing is to tell the 'shaftee', but it could be to say something to the 'shafter'.

Ok, on a serious note.
I'd rather not go into the detail, because it would not be fair for anyone reading this BBS to know before the shaftee.
Clearly, the Shafter knows exactly what had been done, and will have to live with that.
Telling the shaftee will clear my conscience, but the result of this act has already passed and I doubt the shaftee (love these descriptions ) actually knows what came about was due to this person shafting them - so is it worth all the grief?
Then again, If it had happened to me, I'd be really pissed. But not half as pissed as I'd be if I knew I'd been shafted. But if I didn't know, and just thought I'd been extremely unlucky then I could probably deal with it better, if you know what I mean.
Cos if I did know or find out, then I'd want blood. For starters.
Its a hard call, hence my dilemma.
Think I'll sit on it for a bit and see what happens, although I have no wishes to be apathetic.
Cheers

My suggestion: let the shafter know that you know, and that you're quite willing and able let the news out. That might well stop them repeating the abuse.
I'd not tell the shaftee.

Diablos trying to con science?
shaft them both if you can, but blame each one on the other, that way you get to stay out of it, both shafter and shafted shaftees feeling dejected and hard done by, information comes out into the opena dn Diablo gets off scott free.
Woo Yay!

Diablo,
Does naming and shaming the power hungry have any effect on your position / how people will treat you.
If you can clearly say it wont effect you or your position in any way then I think the shaftee should be told what's been going on.
The right thing should be done, as said above, too many people in this world today do not speak up enough..
Andy
Should we mention a previous employee at our place I erm.. spoke up about !!
