a few that immediately come to mind

1) The countryside
2) Our heritage
3) Traditional pubs
4) Our coastlines
5) Our historical architecture, picturesque villages etc.
6) Our expertise in engineering

Countryside?? Flat, bleak, bland and dull imo.

Coastlines?? Majority are dismal places.

The others I agree. Though our engineering prowess is surpassed by many. Everything we make now is a bit crappy.

Both matters of personal opinion I suppose... look hard (i.e. beyond superficial aesthetics) and you will see the beauty!

I agree our manufacturing industry has gone down the pan, but in terms of innovation and design British engineers still have an edge imo.

The countryside. Join the National Trust and open your eyes/mind.

The weather. Crisp winter days, balmy summer days. Flowers in spring. Kicking leaves in autumn.

The standard of living. Sure we're not at the top, but we're nowhere near the bottom.

The opportunities. It's a democracy, so your success or otherwise is largely in your own hands.

The customs and traditions. The erosion of these would be on my dislike list.

And a bunch of other trivial stuff.

Where do you live? The Pennines are just beyond my back garden, and they have some of the greatest views AND the best driving roads you could wish for

Apart from some of the ones around the Scottish Highlands, I'm struggling to argue on the coastlines bit

IMO the engineers produced by this country are still second to none, which is why the large majority of the worlds motorsport teams are based here, or have Britons in their technical staff. On nearly every major engineering project in the world, you will find the design team has a signinificant number of Britons in it.

Our MANUFACTURING prowess however, is second to none in the shoddiness stakes You will find this has occurred since the corporate decision to raise accountants well above their true station, into positions of control People who see only the bottom line are by definition incapable of having vision, or seeing the big picture.

Have you ever considered moving away from the UK for a while? Seriously - it might give you a more positive outlook on the place.

Having sailed around most of the UK's coast (in my former life as a yachtie ), I can confirm that we have many stunning coastlines as well as some great river estuaries and other coastal nooks and crannies to explore. Also many great unspoilt pubs can be reached by boat.

I will move away - however I very much doubt it will improve my overall feeling on the place.

Whenever I have been south of Bristol the heavens have opened on me, so I have just assumed that somebody important doesn't want me to see that part of the world

The overall experience of Wales (mainly the north, admittedly), like that of France, tends to be spoiled by the hostility of the local population

IMO there is much to like about the UK. I have spent quite a bit of time in Italy and France, and whilst both have good points, I wouldn't really want to live there - it's just not "home" for me. I might consider Southern Ireland as an alternative, but it does rain a lot.

I love the UK. The people, the countryside, just life in general here.

Senior why don't you just enjoy what you've got and face the fact nowhere is perfect. You sound like a miserable old git at such a young age. Do you really like to see the worst in everything and everyone or are you secretly a really happy jolly person lol?

I'm happy with what I've got - just not happy where I live.

Nowhere is perfect - I would never suggest that.

Surely you can't criticise the whole country's countryside because of the 1 county you live in? Thats what cars are for, explore the lovely parts of the country. SOme to note:

Yorkshire Dales
Yorkshire Moors
Lake District
Peak District
Snowdonia
Cotswolds

The south west is pretty nice, as is the scottish highlands scenery as already mentioned, and even living here in Surrey, there are some lovely places to see round here, the Downs can be quite impressive

Cotswolds and the hilly areas are nice. I find the moors very bleak and dull.

My thread wasn't really based on the lye of the land really.....

Moved to Plymouth from Northampton about 16 months ago. Lovely place to live, Quick access to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the UK. Downside? the water tastes funny and I'm too far from my family. Could be worse.

I echo what Tel and ajm have said. I love the UK and wouldn't want to live anywhere else, hell I even take most of my holidays in the UK, albeit mainly at various rallies dotted around the country - the motorsport in this country is superb
