Try it in your computer using a software player; its more likely to be a mastering error than a compatability problem. The practical differences between the two formats are negligible, DVD+RW is superior for DVD-Video recorders though.

The more modern players are pretty good at any format, the older ones will normally play DVD-R OK but can struggle with DVD+R. You can sometimes get firmware upgrades for your player to make them more compliant with more of the formats.
Take a look at http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php? and do a search for your player, it will show you which formats should work on your player.
