Sky Digital Picture Problems
Standard digibox not +
Picture keeps breaking up like it does during bad weather but this is constant. Reseated all the cables etc and resetted the digibox as per instructions on Skys website. No change.
Anyone got any ideas? Sods law as about 2 months out of warranty as I was too tight to sign up for extended warranty.
Dish and cabling been in since house built I believe - nearly 3 years now. I moved in 4 months ago and brought digibox from old house.
Any idea how much Sky would charge to send someone out? Thinking its gonna be wiser to cancel current subscription and get girlfriend to sign up for Sky + and get new dish, cabling and box.
Simon.

Mine did the same the other day. Rang SKY, advice was turn off box , remove card. Clean card using tissue then turn on box after 1 min.
Worked for me anyway.

everytime I came home there was picture break-up when I went away it was fine.
When I went to my folks house to see if they were having any probs ...they did !! when I left ..it was fine .
It took a while (and indeed a thread on SN) for the penny to drop !

Had a similar problem, picture tends to 'break up' or just go off. The most annoying thing is that the digibox keeps 'crashing' picture and sound stop, goes to blue screen and then nothing until you unplug the box ,leave for a couple of min's and then plug back in. After a short while you get the 'searching for listing' crap and your away again.
I've had this box for a few years now and Sky have done sod all about it, I've had the normal "turn off the box and clean the card" but this does nothing. I've got three quarters on the strength bar so thats fine. No ones got a snooper near us!!!

Is there decent ventilation around the box as they can overheat and cause picture breakup? Unplug the box overnight to let it cool down. If it works for a while and then misbehaves again it is likely to be overheating. If it does and you know what you are doing unplug it again, take the cover off, clean out any dust and run it with the cover off for increased cooling (make sure no one can touch the live internals) if this cures the problem its overheating. You can get little cooling fans but I can't remember where from.
Disclaimer: if you injure yourself running the box with the cover off its your fault, would you jump off a bridge if I told you to?
The other thing to try is to force the box to download the latest software. In theory it should happen automatically but my box (Sony) didn't. Unplug the box, hold the backup button in and plug back in. Keep holding the backup button until all 3 leds light up. Then wait several minutes for the software to download. I'd try this before taking the cover off.

Maybe the dish needs re-aligning, its quite a tight line-up required for the digital signal. You say the dish was there when you moved in, sometimes the franchised installers dont line it up for a maximum signal.

have you lot thought about coronal mass ejections. lots of solar activity at this time. charged particles create havoc for stationart sats like astra and eutelsat. do you notice this mostly at night BTW?
