Yep I dont think there's many actually 'making a living', Ive sold quite abit of stuff on there on recently and made some good money but when you factor in your paypal fees, answering emails, packing stuff up and running down to the post office every couple of days or arranging couriers your probably better off getting a job!
Like anything you need to source stuff very cheap on a regular basis and there's lots of people selling the same stuff and ideas on there.

What Henrik said. You can make a few dollars on the side by selling your own junk but don't expect to make a very good living unless you get the right product - it's pretty much saturated from what I can see.

If they are, then they usually own 'real' shops too, I would think, and only use eBay to increase sales

I myself make a lot selling promos/test presses and rare and sought after records, and i know several people who sell various things purely on ebay and that is their sole source of income (plenty in the far east too who ship worldwide)
There are plenty- you just dont know about them!

One way is to sell something there is an unserved demand for.
A mate of mine made a few grand selling a caravan attatchment that was really hard to find nationally,it succeeded on ebay because of the search function and he was able to get it made cheaply by a local firm.

It's one thing if you live in Hong Kong and can buy fake Hello Kitty watches etc for 20p each from the wholesalers market, but it's a different story in the UK where living costs are higher and the goods generally are more expensive to get hold of.
I'm sure there are a few success stories, such as yourself, but I don't think that there are *many*

eBay makes the "right product" that much easier to sell to a much wider audience than any other way available.
The "right product" can make you more than a good wage but it does help if you don't need a wage in the first place, allowing your selling to begin as fun rather than a necessity to pay the bills.
The key is to not tell anybody else what it is you are selling or where, although obviously we mean eBay here, but what.............?

You CAN make a good living but it is a full time job i started selling all my crap the realised that people pay silly money for some things
I have 40 mini motos to go on hopefully sell them all before christmas
getting stuff from china is a good way to go although you need to buy huge amounts at a time

Sell stuff thats low(ish) cost (even lower to you when you buy in bulk) high demand.
There was one woman on the radio the other week whos been running an ebay shop/auctions full time for 18 months now. She said it was going well and when they asked her what her turnover was gonna be for the next year or so she reckoned about £30,000,000 !!! She was selling baby/kids products, cant remember exactly what though....
