Default Green Day: Boulevard of Broken Dreams

I must be going soft...but I really like this, and the video is pretty good too.

Are they coming of age these days ? I always thought the singer was trying way too hard to be Joe Strummer. The last couple of tracks I've heard from their American Idiot album have almost made me go out and buy it and I've hated all of their previous work.

So who's got this album and what do you think of it?

And will you rip it ?

Girlf. is a big fan, I've only recently been able to listen to them for any length of time. Latest album is a lot more 'mature' in its sound and I find it quite easy to kick back and listen to it all the way through.

They started off as a very raw, punk-type band but have slowly refined their style into what you hear now. If you like Boulevard, check out Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) from the Nimrod album if you've never heard it before.

Have got this album, and loved it when I first had it.

There's still a lot of all-too-obvious influences - The Clash (vocals, mainly), The Damned (there's a straight copy of a couple of seconds of New Rose), and also some Springsteenesque moments.

Still a good album, but very derivative. Fine if you're an old punk like me, but slightly less than groundbreaking. Mind you, they hate Bush, so clearly they have a lot in their favour!

Excellent album! My album of the year without a doubt. There are a couple of lesser tracks but only so because of the company they keep. There is a concept which runs through the entire album and songs like 'Boulevard..' make more sense within that context. It's clever, if not groundbreaking (but then what is nowadays?) and there's many really good foot tappers. I love it, my gf loves it, my dad likes it, my mum likes it and my 10 yr old daughter loves it (although there are one or two places where I have to loudly sing the wrong lyrics over the top )

Buy it. You won't be disappointed!

Love it. It makes me feel young again. Some people may find the "concept" nature of it a little too prog rock for their liking.

My six year old loves it.

Definately grown up on the new album and its very good. Boulevard, american idiot etc are both superb.

As previously mentioned though, other classics are Good Riddance and the unforgettable Basket Case (superb video!).

And the b-side of "American Idiot" rips the riff from The Boys' "First Time".

But who cares, Green Day rock and always have done. "Dookie" is still a cracker of an album.

What do you mean "at last"?! They've 'had it right' since their first album 39/Smooth in 1990! Curiously, the more mainstream they become the better their music gets, or am I just a sentimental straight edge/hardcore fan getting old?.

No, I've always thought they crossed over pretty well. Mainstream sound to singles, more alternative feel to album material. Granted the new album tends more towards the mainstream sound but it still works for me. Buy American Idiot and International Superhits and there's not a lot of their catalogue you're missing out on.

Top band, seeing them in Manchester next month

I think you have answered your own question! Been listening to power pop since the early eighties, and Husker Du are pretty much my fave ban of all time. so I do have a little knowledge in this area

Letter bomb off the American Idiot album 9 (track 10) very good, bit of a SLF thing going on.
3 or 4 good tracks on International Superhits

Spotted the SLF influence as well - basically, it's a bit of a musical Frankenstein, which, once you've spotted is hard to ignore. Track 4 (I think) "Holiday" has obviously been, ahem, heavily influenced by the chorus from Iggy's Passenger, and every time I listen to it I spot another.

Still ranks as one of the best albums of the year, though at times you do feel it's like listening to Punk Legends Volume I, II and III at the same time.

Yep, the "influence" of late 70's classic punk is very very obvious, at least someone is still flying the flag.
Think they should incorporate Rockaway beach into something though

Haven't heard the album yet, it's on my xmas list. Are you talking about Stiff Little Fingers, 'suspect device' or am I making obscure connections between "letter bomb" and "SLF"?!

Think it might be from Suspect Device, and no, you're probably not wrong in making the connection, though it certainly hadn't occurred to me.

Princess in a school girl's dream
May I please speak with you?
I'm having troubles with control
And it's all because of you
Today I kept on falling down
I thought it was the street
So I look down at my shoes
They were on the wrong feet

I find it hard to be myself
(Can you please explain?)
I do not think that it's my health
(You're the one to blame)
You're the one I wish I had
And now my girlfriend is getting mad
(I cannot call this sane)

Today as I was walking down
You bumped into me
You said "excuse me" and walked away
As I dropped to my knees
I prayed to the being in the sky
That my parents told me of
I asked about you but no reply
No clues about your love!

I find it hard to be myself
(Can you please explain?)
I do not think that it's my health
(You're the one to blame)
My girlfriend left me on the phone
I'm pathetically left here alone
(I cannot call this sane)

Can we find a way
So that you can stay
I think I'm gonna Pop

I find it hard to be myself
(Can you please explain?)
I do not think that it's my health
(You're the one to blame)
You're the one I wish I had
And now my girlfriend is getting mad
(I cannot call this sane)

Can we find a way
So that you can stay
I think I'm gonna Pop

I know Jake Burns, Ali, Henry and Brian personally. In fact, I did the first ever SLF interview and photographed them for Sounds way back in the 70's.
