Scarface - Good movie or not?
I remember first watching this movie about 8 years ago and I love it.
Since then I've only seen another two times and the last time was this week.
Watching the movie objectively, I found it aged quite badly (musical effects, etc) and the story line very slow.
Have I missed the point? Will I now also hate other 'classics' that I haven't watched in a while, like Goodfellas, Carlito's Way, etc???
What are other people opinions on this movie?

yes you will.
most films age......although people still find it "cool" to say they like them in some sort of "film buff style"
its like people saying the old disney cartoons are better than the new stuff...really???? try and get my kids to sit through Snow White when they could be watching Buzz Lightyear!
Scarface was good and now, like so many things is old and dated.
T
ps....people coming on here and saying "say ello to my little friend" makes it influential....not timeless!

Brilliant film - the slow storyline is their for a reason, it just show's you how he gets slowly, gradually more and more "f$cked up", stronger, yet weaker. The scene in the restaurant with his missus is brilliant.
I think I'll watch it tonight come to think of it.

I've never understood what the rage about these stupid gansgter films is - you all know that there are proper gangster films out there based on real life gangs...not this poncey Al Pacino crap whose voice gets a little repetitive!
Personally, I prefer films that challenge the thinking a little...like Donnie Darko, Memento etc...

"I neva ****ed anybody over in my life, who didn't have it comin' to 'im, you got that? All I have in this world is my *****, and my word, and I don't break 'em for no one, jou understand?"
I don't disagree there are some fantastic lines in the movie, but do the odd good line make a good movie??
Take films like Goodfellas and The Shawshank Redemption, they don't need to rely on effects, but it's just an interesting story, told well.

For example (and I know I will get grief for it): The Italian Job
Aged badly, the odd good line, some cars ( which obviously makes it a classic movie according to SN ), a bit of a camp Britsh comedy movie in places, a bit of a bad heist movie in other, some famous actors...
But does that make it a good movie?

only very few ppl would take an old subaru over a new one.....and only very few would sit down to watch Its a Wonderfull Life when they could stick Spiderman 2 in the DVD!

Another Anaology
Beatles or Busted..... Both popular but which is better..
Saw Scarface for the first time a few months ago and really enjoyed it.
Saw Terminator on TV recently and thought wow the musics dated.
But Still really enjoyed it.
Once I start watching a film I soon forget if its dated or not it its an enjoyable film....

Great example......i assume your implication is The Beatles are better? if so, you may be right......but 14 year old girls in 2004 would rather watch/listen to a Busted album than a Beatles one.......so in 2004...Busted are better.
T
ps. if Lennon had come up with lyrics like "i sit at the front of the class to get the best view of your ****" then i'd be more of a Beatles fan!

I would, every day of the week.
Some things don't age, mainly because they're not based around technology or a particular time. I's A Wonderful Life was originally a contemporary drama and although it's now viewed as a period piece, the central message has not changed.

All I'm saying is that if I wanted to watch a dull, gangster movie, with long slow dull periods in the film, with a little bit of violence, and generally something IMHO a bit crap... I'd watch The Godfather instead!!
(I think I'm going to get flamed big style for not liking Scarface and The Godfather)
In fact, most 'movie buffs' don't like my opinion of Pulp Fiction!!! As the three films mentioned here are now in my 'overated' list!

the message is up to date still but the delivery is old and stale
