Default BBC - Bears: Spies in the woods

Excellent program, using same technic's as "spies in the herd".

The beeb at its best!

When do you see programs like this on ITV, C4 or C5 (Not going to bother saying sky!).

Agreed, excellent footage, although the John West salmon advert kept popping into my mind!

I was skeptical they could fool bears with those covert cameras because of their sense of smell. I would love to know what they did to the cameras to "dehumanise" them!

The mirrored "stealth" camera was good, but you can't help but wonder what would happen if a bear got close enought to see his own reflection in it!

I thought the polar bears were going to suss the camera's.

"Their sense of smell can be up to 30k's" !! Amazing!

Its great watching bears "do" things because it gives you an appreciation of their strength. The footage showing them flipping rocks on the beach was a good example. How many times have you done the macho thing trying to turn a large rock over on wet sand? You have to overcome the suction of the sand plus the weight of the rock but watching the bears do it there was some large rocks going over there, it was like watching a JCB arm at work - no yield, just power! Perfect example of mechanical advantage gained at the expense of movement range. The muscle is connected further from the joint than our own muscles, plus their muscle bulk is obviously superior to our own.

As an aside, did anyone see that documentary that was on a few years back about the bloke who had an ambition to build a bear proof suit and then test it against a bear? It was a classic!

Yes they were! They even included a bonus close up of a pile of leafy panda poo to illustrate how inefficient their digestive system is.
