Where have all the guitar heros gone?
Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Eric Clapton, are there any equivalents in today's rock world?

Johnny Marr in the 80's, Kurt Cobain in the 90's, not sure at the moment.

Gallagher ? As in Oasis ? Guitar hero ? I don't recall one awesome solo ! Ok so he's pretty good at writing songs with 4 major chords, but IMO one of the most overrated bands. I know lots of people liked them, but I didn't particularly. One good album I spose.
Clapton ? He's ok, but not genius.
As for today's guitar heros, the biggest for me has to be Matthew Bellamy (Muse front man). I have to be in the mood for Muse, but the guy is an absolute genius. The bass player Chris Wolstenhome is pretty good too.
I've just bought Alter Bridges album (Creed with a different front man) and some of the guitar work, by Mark Tremonti, on there is very good. I believe he was helped out by Troy Stetina.
Graham Coxon is also a good guitarist, apparently when he left Blur they had to replace him with 2 guitarists

I agree that mark tremonti is a great guitarist...I was looking at a PRS and you have to be good to have a signature model PRS (aka santana).
As for clapton....good
Hendrix.....v. good
Gallagher....most competant guitarists can do what he does, but he's alright
in terms of new guitarists.
Jason Mraz is great on acoustic....really soulful.
John Mayer is also a very very skilled guitarist.
Kyle Cook (of course), is probably the best guitarist I've seen in recent history...seeing MBT play live is a joy! technically perfect.
not too keen on the guitarists for indie bands etc...they never seem to do much technical guitar work. It doesn't mean they can't, but they just don't

The most amazing PRS I saw was the Dragon http://www.guitarhangar.com/guitars/prsdrag339.htm
Now that is one beautiful inlay, and incredible craftmanship.
However, we digress

Technically speaking Slash is probably the best living/working guitarist of the moment - check out the Velvet Revolver album - but there are plenty of other great and unsung guitarists in rock music. I agree with Matthew Bellamy, some really nice riffs and solos. Another to consider is Luke Morley from Thunder, some 15 odd years in the business and everything from moody accoustics to enthralling solos. Listen to the outtro of She's So Fine from the Backstreet Symphony album to hear what I mean.

Should have clarified - Rory Gallagher, not Noel
The Alter Bridge album is awesome...but not too many guitar solos on it.

guitarists.
I also saw Maroon 5 live about 18 months ago..and although adam levine is the singer (great voice), and played a few chords here and there....in one of the songs, he picked up an SG, and kicked out one of the coolest solos I've heard! that man can play

Have to agree, in terms of pure guitar genius and technical ability Vai/Van Halen/Satriani/Slash are still the best but they have been on the scene for ages.
There does appear to be a dearth of emerging guitar heroes. But then the guitar solo has been out of fashion since Nirvana. I think young kids are more likely to ask for a pair of decks rather than a guitar these days.
This isn't surprising given the fact that there isn't much guitar work out there at the moment to inspire them.
I'd agree that the guy from Muse is pretty good (you can tell from his music that he's a very frustrated muso that given half a chance would probobly record 5 minute solos on every track if it didn't mean commercial suicide!) but I would really only describe him as 'competent'. The fact that we're forced to talk about him highlights the fact that there's no one out there at the moment.
Ahhh....the endless nights/years spent practicing followed by a fruitless career as a musician - why the hell didn't I go to university and become a lawyer I'd be loaded now!!!
Sorry bit off topic there for a second....I'm ok now...

I think to be a truly great guitarist, you have to be two things. Technically competant, and have the ability to make a guitar sing. I've heard many technically amazing guitarists, but that's all it is!...sometimes the odd bit of magic! even a mistake, makes the difference for me. If you can make it soulful, with no mistakes! then you're a winner for me. It's not all about solos too .... (but they are a good judge of ability)
slash was my early childhood hero...him and bananaman

Surely the 'Gallagher' in question is Rory Gallagher? Not that knuckle dragging oasis monkey man bloke.

Well, just listening to The Darkness album, and there's some pretty good solo's on there.
I know true rockers dont like them, but I think they're good, hints of Maiden in some of their tunes. Takes me back to the US rock bands of the 70's - Journey, Boston, Styx etc

How come no-one else has mentioned my two faves: Jimmy Page and Johnny Winter.
I once saw Johnny Winter And........ in Brum, and they had a SECOND guitarist better than most others I'd seen, a guy called Rick Derringer, and I saw amost all the big bands in the 70's and 80's.
