its good that they're trying. it depends what constitutes a "red" food, and what makes a food "green" though as to how effective it is. i mean, if "healthy living" readymeal food = green, then its a pointless task, as they're far from green

given that most people dont know (or dont care) what (for instance) sodium does, and wouldn't know a polyunsaturated fat if it kicked them, it's a great idea to paraphrase all of this in a simple "this is a good/ok/bad food to eat" manner.

but what they REALLY need to do is educate children in school correctly on nutrition and food. this will equip them with the ability to make informed decisions on what they're eating. sure, if they then want to go and drink beer and eat chocolate anyway, they can.. but at least they're doing it knowing exactly what it does to their body.

there was a HUGE mis-education that fats are bad, sugars aren't bad, sodium content doesn't count for anything, and glycemic-index and load are unimportant in the 80s and 90s. thats what needs to change. if foods are labelled with that mis-education in mind, then it only reinforces most laymans' wrong beliefs. if they're correctly labelled so that the right items are in the right category - then thats great.

Yet another recycled Government initiative.
