Default Cholesterol Testing

Hello

I had a test for cholesterol as part as my companies "health week" here in America. It was a little high on the "bad" cholesterol and a little low on the "good" cholesterol.

Not that I don't trust Americans, but I would like to get it tested when I come home (tomorrow -- woohoo). How do I go about that? Is it something I go to my Doctor for?

Thanks,

Steve.

yes you can either go to the doctor or you can go to boots and buy a home test.

what were your two levels?

i should also add, if you go to a doctor for this, ask for a full lipid profile.

Boots are doing free cholesterol tests at the moment, you just need to book the test. They only do the total cholesterol check though.

thats sort of the problem.. total cholesterol is useless to know on its own. it needs to be in context with ratios.. and preferably all lipid levels in fact.

Yes I agree Milo but since my result was 2.75 total I was not too worried.

that wouldn't be your total cholesterol. your total should be somewhere under 200 (but not THAT far under 200!!).

2.75 sounds like either your (total cholesterol/hdl) ratio or your (ldl/hdl) ratio... either of which are good scores... so yeah, you shouldn't be worried

Hello

My total cholestorol was 209 (should be below 200) and my HDL was 36 (should be above 45).

Thanks for that Milo, I did not understand how it was measured. Used to be around 6 but have got it down by dieting and the use of Statins after the operation.
