Urgent help required ref HPi and my new rallycar
Have just done an HPi on the rallycar I'm about to collect this weekend and it has flashed up as a Cat C Insurance loss - Vehicle extensively damaged but repairable - Insurer decided not to repair. This dates from Aug 1999
The car is 24 years old and still registered as LAT***V and not on a "Q" plate and all is straight with it so:
a) Does this matter?
b) Will it need to be put on a "Q" (I'd have thought this would need to have been done in 99)
c) Shall I just get a new VIN plate and V5 from a car not on HPi
d) The current owner didnt know anthing about it as he's only owned it from Feb 2004 and never had a problem so am I worrying unnecessarily?
Anyone got any experience of this?

(a) for a rally car no - will only affect resale value - and if it is a rally car then smacks are par for the course.
(b) q plate was only used when proff of age for parts that make a certain % of the build cannot be proven
(c) illegal
(d) yes

If its going to be used in a rally, i wouldnt worry about it.
Just check that it isnt two different cars welded together, so to speak.
Check the VIN number on the car matches that on the Log Book.
Check the engine number on the car matches that on the log book.
Have a good visual look round it, check that all repair work that has been done in the past has been done properly, not a bodge job.
If all that checks out ok and you feel happy with it, i see no problems.

Shells straight (as can be expected)
VIN matches V5, engine doesn't (understandable as it was an 1100cc originally)
Its all OK as much as I can see but got a specialist coming up with me when i collect

get the engine number on the V5 corrected richard, just alter it when you register it in your name, the DVLA will do it without any questions normally.
CAT C isnt a big deal on a rally car, you can retain the reg number.

to be honest mate dont know about all the q plates and that, but i do know a bit about insurance "write offs".i own a cat d repaired car,and ive owned 1 previously.dont worry too much about the insurance classing it as decided not to repair.i know for a fact that cars (today) can be wrote off when there is very little damage at all.a car can be stolen and recovered and just a little bit of damage will class it as a write off.
its got to be some sort of scam when a car can have a few little dents and scratches and gets "wrote off".the best advice i can give is to find out exactly what was damaged, and how much repair work it has had if you can.a car can be a class c and have very little damage or be a class c and have a lot more damage.i think it all depends on the assessor.some might say its a d some a c.
have a look in the auto trader at the salvage section and compare cars of same insurance classes.you ll soon see there is a lot of variation between one persons opinion and another.

Sounds all fine mate.My mrs has been driving a cat c accident damaged repairable for 2 years.I bought it at auction and fixed it myself, and as Gaz says before it wasn't too badly damaged. The only thing is if she was to claim the insurance if it was wriiten off or stolen then they only pay you out 75% or something like that of the true value (iirc). As for the Q plate as jjones says its usually a re-shell job with parts of different origin.
The car sounds totally all above board,so relax and enjoy it
