Question HELP required! Am I being scammed here?

Selling my 200SX from a bloke on SXOC. All is going well, he and I are doing the deal on the 27th and he is going to give me my asking price after coming down to look at the car..
Now he mails me and says he is getting a tracker fitted to the car the monday after he is buying it.
He is asking me for the VIN "For the tracker fitters", does anyone know of any tracker fitters that require the VIN for fitment? What is the likelyhood of him cloning the car or am I just being uber paranoid here?
Any help would be appreciated and yes I know he could have got it from looking at the car, but the fact is he didnt.
Cheers,
astraboy.

It's not his VIN until he's bought it so I wouldn't give it out.

Ask who's fitting the tracker and phone it straight through to them.

Don't give it to him, as above phone it direct. Explain to the buyer, no offence but I am being careful. If he is pukka, he will not mind.

I had to give it to trackstar when I had my tracker fitted. In your situation I wouldn't tell him until the car is his (at which point he can look himself anyway )

As Azyman says, better safe than sorry!

but!!

if he wants to do an hpi, which most people do now, he would need the vin, id just give it him, theres not too much he can do with the vin anyway, just say I need your home address and telephone number, ile send you the vin in the post as you dont trust e-mail or something? then you have his address etc.

Seeing how VIN numbers are now on display on dashboards on many cars, and etched onto glass on others, I can't see the problem!

When I had mine fitted they said there was no need for me to give it to them over the phone (And I had the VIN number). They said that the fitter would take it from the car when they fitted the unit.

If he was going to take the info for cloning perposes then wouldn't he have come prepared to take this info anyway when he viewed the car?

Personnally I wouldn't have any hesitation in giving it out, you have met the guy so can probably tell if he is that sort of person.

Sending it by post would be a good idea (as previously mentioned) if you still have reservations!

The other side of the coin would be that he might think you have something to hide by not giving out the info he has asked for!

Just my opinion mate. Good luck with the sale.

Not strictly true. They ask you to read the VIN to them and then they confirm it.

As people have said he should have read the VIN when he viewed it. Im guessing hes doing a HPi now and wants to be safe. Why not let him come back and take it off the car himself.

Its always difficult when selling. Who can you trust?

I gave mine to the buyer of my car so they could do an HPI check, I needed it before I picked mine up, can't do any harm I reckon.

As comic cuts says, most cars display them on the windscreen nowadays anyway.
