we all think we are not getting paid enough
i am a buyer for a construction firm
consider what you buy and what you save get it all together and how many good accounts youve developed into good discount suppliers
[as most bosses dont realise what you save they just look at what is spent] then go se the main man/women

you should be looking between 25/30k i sposse if your on more then that let me know when your thinking of going in for the rise i will apply for your old job

How well do you get on with your boss(es)? Do you think your position is secure enough that you could suggest an incentive scheme whereby you get a % of what you save the company.Has to be properly set up but can be of benefit to all concerned.

If i was on 25-30k especially 30k i would be over the moon so as you can guess
i am on nowhere near that

25 to 35K depending on your spend ................. could be more, not less.

The lower level would be for a young inexperienced guy .........

Agree with r32 .........25 to 35K depending on where you are in the country, your position, what industry and your spend

Well i am in electronic communications (RF) and i have been doing the buying about 5 years now and i have been at the company for 12 years.
we are based in the northwest of England unfortunately i have never taken my CIPS (i would have to self fund it) so maybe that is where i am falling down then

If you've been with the same company for 12 years and you feel you are underpaid / undervalued you are gonna have to move companies .

Generally speaking if you let companies take the **** they will.

Either move for more money or move to a company that will fund your career development (Pay for the CIPS - Whatever that is )

My Mrs is age 22, she has been with her company 3 years, she has been doing purchasing just over 1 and a 1/2 years now. She is also studying a CIPS course, which is one evening a week. Currently she is on 20K, but as of next june when she passes another CIPS exam, she is basically then nearly fully qualified in this job and can expect to earn 25K upwards in her company.
She gets a purchasing magazine every month by mail order, lists all purchasing jobs etc all over the country, 98% of jobs advertised in ther are 30K +

The problem is that your boss will not be paying you based on what you save the company, he will be paying you based on how much he would have to pay someone else to do your job.

Or he'll be paying you what he thinks he can get away with.

I used to work in purchasing - about 20 years ago - Long before a CIP had been invented I'm sure . Anyway - A job opportunity came up where we needed another buyer and the job was advertised. I got my mate to ring up and apply for the Job - Over the phone they offered him £2k pa more than I was on and he told them he had no purchasing experience at all.

I had a "chat" with my boss and told him he would be looking for another buyer if he didn't give me a pay rise.

He gave me the pay rise and I left.

If they are gonna take the **** they will take the ****.

Chief - I'm in recruitment and have recruited a couple of positions in the £35-40 Bracket with cars and profit share bonuses. These were people with 7-10 years experience. A lot of it depends on your industry sector .....

I have 2 mates in their early 30's who do what you do - one Manages a team in the Airline Industry and is on a package of about £70K.
The other works for a London Local Authority and is on about £38K

Hope this doesn't upset you too much .....

Look for another job, although bear in mind that the area you are in will be lower than say the Midlands or the South. Get sorted with another position then go see your boss and talk it over with him. What is your spend?

My other half buys print for a large organisation.

She recons between 20-35K, closer to 35k. For 10 years experience assuming the person is any good at it.

Salary depends on a lot of things, like what area you specialise in, is it general procurement or within specific commodity areas.
Are your skills operational or strategic ?
Location, see some shocking salaries down south.
Qualifications, CIPS, Legal, contract all stand well but I know a few senior procurement directors without a qualification to their name.

I have working in many area’s from engineering, manufacturing, pneumatic conveying, medical gas, glass and print.

The skills are transferable

My purchasing manager is 50, has 25 years industry experience, and is on a package of £70k. His no 2 is 35ish, gets a package of £50k. Both are professionally qualified.

Thailand ? ? ?
Where has that come from ?

Carl starts his new job on monday, gets his van so now he is available for removals and all sorts now. I think I will be using him to clear all the ****e out of my back garden (you know the ****e I mean, the stuff where you keep saying to yourself "I'll move it over the weekend before there is too much of it" but you never do ! !)

Get yourself a new job, a change will do you good and atleast if you start looking you can then give yourself an indication of what type of money is out there for you to earn. You'll be surprised ! !
