Armistice Day silence
Will you be observing the minutes silence today at 11am. Seems like less people seem to be doing this these days.

.............. and here
Just to bring it home, please visit this site Commonwealth War Graves Commission I'm sure many of you had relatives that have fallen in conflict and they are registered here (from the WW1 onwards)
Just try and complete the search on the right as best you can and all the names relating to your search come up
Whether we agree with the causes they fought for or not, we should honour them, they made the ultimate sacrifice for us all
My thoughts will be with all the currently serving heroes we have stationed out in some of these God forsaken places.

We will be observing it here - I will make sure of it !
Had a major rant at work the other day as only two of us had poppies on. Thats out of 40, a few more are wearing them now I'm pleased to say.
Bottom line is that many fine people have given their lives to keep this country and us free, the least we can do is spare them two minuites a year !

All our bakeries did. I know the 1st and 2nd world wars don't seem to have a lot of relevance to us but we should never, ever forget what happened. Saving Private Ryan and Schindlers List should be compulsory viewing in all our schools IMHO.
These days the vets of the world wars are old - but go take a look at any memorial - they were all 18/ 19/ 20 - imagine if that was happening on that scale now? The numbers killed in Iraq so far a so mind blowingly tiny by comparison and look at all the attention that's getting. (NOTE: That is not in anyway belittling ANYBODYS contribution and sacrifice - merely a comparison.)

IMO the rememberance sunday should specifically not mention any conflict. It's fine to remember peoples sacrifice, but things do lose their relevance.
We still remember Verdun and the Somme, but it's 90 yrs ago. We don't mention those who fell at Balaclava or at Waterloo. Was their sacrifice any less? How long do we remain 'grateful' to those who fell in WWI & WWII?
It should just be a blanket thing, then you avoid the embarassment and finger pointing that will inevitably go on when the numbers who fail to see those wars as relevant start to out wiegh those who do.

Yup - we have cannon thingys going off here at 11 and again at 11:02. A member of the British Legion reads a poem and the deputy mayor spoke briefly. The majority of our office was outside in the park. Sobering really.

I remember not all that long ago when the country came to a standstill for those 2 minutes. All the traffic stopped and drivers would get out of their cars and stand in respect of the memory of those who lost their lives in the defence of our freedom.
I think it is very important that this tradition should continue. Nothing wrong in reminding ourselves of the futility and obscene nature of war and how much better it is to avoid it unless we are attacked positively. Also how important it is to maintain our military defences.
Disappointing that Tiggs seems to be unable to defend his attitude towards this annual festival.

Why should Tiggs have to defend his attitude?
You say that we owe these people so much, our freedom of speech, freedom of action (to a certain degree) then have a go at Tiggs for using that right!
To force people to be involved in rememberance days is the antihesis of what (some of) these sacrifices are about.
It's his decision, for whatever reasons.

I managed to find my great uncle on the CWGC site, my Dad gave me some details i could type in.
He was a 19 year old Joiner / carpenter when he was conscripted. At the age of 22 he was a seargent stationed out in Rangoon where he died whilst in charge of a recon outfit.
Just take 1 minute to think about millions like him who had no choice but to do their bit. I always remember my Grandad telling me that he never fought for his country, he fought for his life!
He never came home for 4 years of serving in North Africa in the 8th Army until a truck he was in was straiffed (sp) and wiped out 12 of his best mates. He got away with having one of his calfs blown off and the truck keys lodged in his stomach but like he said, it was his ticket home.
These weren't soldiers, these blokes were painters and decorators etc fighting for their lives with a few weeks training. How dare anyone forget what any soldier has done for his country past and present.
A public display of appreciation and thought must be offered by everyone in recognition for these chaps.
Just for one minute PLEASE try and put yourself in their position. Today happily typing away in your office.............. by February you are in some mad country where every ****** wouldn't think twice about blowing your head off

lol....didnt know i had to "defend" my position!
but as im asked.....
i dont/didnt observe the silence (although i have no idea what i was doing at 11 so i may have done by mistake????) for many reasons....and no real reasons......
1. i see no point, im selfish and if i see no benifit to me i dont often bother....i dont vote, i dont stay quiet at 11am (happy for others to though and wouldnt try to stop anyone that was doing it)
2. thats it really....i just dont see the point....but this has no reflection on my views on the issues- for all you know i may donate ££££££ to relevant causes....i may own 10 zillion poopies.......but i have other things to do at 11am on a busy day.
