You'll find the mean looking ones weighing around 20 stone will be happy to take their time and show you their licence. Make sure you tell them you suspect that he isn't qualified first though....

TYour Hackney License MUST be in the cab with you, and you MUST show it, and give your number to anyone who asks.
Failure to do so, is a loss of license
Alcazar
BTW: any prob with a taxi, get it's reg no, and if you can it's Hackney plate number, and make and colour of vehicle, also time of day, and ring the local council Hackney office. They will follow up problems on your behalf, and report back.

Most taxis I've been in have their licence on display, either stuck to the glass that separates you from the driver in a hackney cab, or dangling from something or stuck to the passenger visor if it's a minicab.

For the record, if you have a problem with a black cab driver in London, do not just write down the number of the licence on display - IIRC it is for the cab itself rather than the driver - you will also have to ask for personal id number, and he/she will be very reluctant to give it out.
After an 'incident' this cabbie took some strong persuasion from 2 Police Officers before he would hand over his personal licence number to me. All to no avail because the Black Cab complaints people are about as much use as t1ts on a fish.

Many in Lisbon seem to share the cab, and the licence. Driver will often look nothing like the picture.
I've had a number of run-ins. The last, I asked for the guy's licence and he told me he didn't have one as he worked illegally - point blank.
So I reached over and took his key out of the ignition.
Was a bit more cooperative after that.
