What do we all Smoke (if at all)?
Tried to run the same question over on SuperMuppets, but didn't get much response. SO, question is now with you, the general user community, what is your choice of baccy, if at all?
Over the years I've built up an impressive smokers cough, stained fingers and breath like a compost heap from all sorts of liasons with madame nicotine, so you can vote for more than one.
Enjoy!

I've never smoked. Too many people in my family have died from cancer as a result of it & I don't want to be the next.

You've got to respect that.

Interestingly, the majority of voters don't smoke as it currently stands.

Well, keep the non-smoking votes coming in, looks like us chimney pots are in the minority on this one!

Don't wanna hijack a thread, but...

Has the recent advertising campaign, showing people smoking cigarettes with artery-clogging fat dripping out of them, not put you off just a TINY bit?

I'm just curious. If i was a smoker, i'd be having a fookin serious chat with myself....

Nah makes no difference to me. As arrogant as it sounds, we all know its bad, and besides I'd rather go in 50 years time on my own terms, with a cuban, than in 55 on someone elses!

I asked that to a smoker I live with and while she says it's disgusting, she continues to smoke.

I also asked her if she actually can see the "SMOKING KILLS" type label on each packet, again, she knows it's there, but it doesn't put her off in the slightest.

Benson & Hedges Special Lights. N.American market ciggies roughly equivalent to UK Benson & Hedges (in the glod packs).

Smoking is great.

As a non-smoker I'd like to give my heartfelt congratulations to all the people that choose to smoke.
Why?
Why the **** not?
If I wanted to bang heroin into my veins I'd do it, as it is, I'll leave that for the time being. Just as I'll leave my former cigarette habit firmly in the past. However I do support your right to smoke, even if it puts me off my food in a restaurant . I knew the deal when I sat down to eat in a smoking area. The same goes for pubs, if I don't want to breathe your secondhand smoke then I'll leave the place. Pretty simple isn't it? Freedom of choice for all.

Getting back on topic my favourites when I used to smoke were Marlboro, cafe cremes, cuban cigars and "recreational" roll ups.

I used to smoke. I used to enjoy it but eventually managed to stop although it was very hard to do. Don't even want another one in the slightest now which is a great relief

I found out the hard way what it does to your arteries but luckily before I had a heart attack, so no damage to my heart. I had a quad bypass earlier this year and there is no doubt that it was the smoking that clogged up my arteries, like that advertisement!

Its not very nice having a bypass, even though its under anaesthetic. They take a "Skil saw" to your chest and saw that open, put you on a pump for your blood flow, stop your heart while they sew the grafts in and deflate your lungs. Takes over 4 hours. Then they hope that the heart starts up alright and that your lungs dont suffer from being deflated. If all that is ok they wire your chest back up and some time the next day you wake up full of drain tubes and a catheter.

After about 3-4 months you get over the surgery although the 2foot 6" slice in your leg where they removed the vein hurts for a long time after that.

The job works very well and I feel fully fit again now. Just back to normal really.

Now is all that worth it though so you can smoke now? I'll wager that when you get older and the trouble starts to show, you will still want to live just as much as you do now. If you are really unlucky the heart attack gets you before you get the bypass done. Any heart attack will physically damage your heart and it won't repair even if you live through it. The past pleasure that you got from smoking does not compensate as you fall over and expire at an early age.

The other problem of course is that you get lung cancer. Just imagine at the age of 40 or so being told that by your doctor and you cannot be cured.

Smoking of course is a completely personal choice as it should be. But its a good thing to really understand the consequences if that what you want to do. Life really does get more precious as time passes by.

Maybe my experience will help you to make a decision.

Les

That's terrible Leslie, but a lot of people just don't or won't think ahead like that. Or believe it will never happen to them.
I stopped smoking for health reasons (wasn't fit enough to play football anymore) and haven't gone back to it since. I found it fairly easy to stop once I realised what it was doing to me.
