Question Are we going to get a hard winter this year??

I keep hearing various bits and pieces on the TV and radio about how we could possibly have the hardest winter on record!!, some independant meteorological company has been making the warnings, lack of sun spots and other bits and pieces, although the met office are denying it saying you cant forecast safely further than 8 weeks ahead!

I have had a scour around the Net and cant find anything, anyone got any more info on this "potential" hard winter?? just thinking donuts in the car park

Cheers

Dave

Don't mind cold. Just hate rain and miserable weather in the mornings.

I'd say it's gonna be a proper winter yes, cold like it was 15 years ago. Ice everywhere. Grrrrr, chatter chatter.

There was a claim that it would be the hardest winter this century (think about that for a moment).

However, yes it will be hard winter (depending on what you term "hard") unless it isn't.

Given the trouble the met office seem to have accurately forecasting 24 hours ahead, I'm inclined to agree that maybe it's impossible to predict.

I'm no fan of hard winters in general, but anything that kills off the bloody wasps has go to be a good thing IMHO

Media hype.

Metcheck (which I have no time for when it comes to long range forecasting), basically released a press release saying it looked possible that it would be a colder winter than in previous years. By the time it got into the papers/TV etc. it had been hyped up into blizzards, new ice age etc.

When it comes down to it, no one knows. It could indeed be a cold one, or it might be the warmest on record. End of.

Ian - is there any public source that you DO have time for regarding long-range forecasting?

Or short-range, for that matter?

(I'm using intellicast for Lisbon, not impressed, but can't be bothered to find an alternative...)

I love snow, and so does my scoob - we had a big load here last year (Oxfordshire), and she sailed through it no problem - bring it on!

I don't trust *any* public long range forecasts.

I don't trust *any* public medium range forecasts.

Only short range (0 - 72 hours) forecasts I trust are from the Met Office, but I have to say that. Even so, by that I mean the stuff that actually comes from the Met Office, not the BBC/ITV interpretation of it.

Breden, for your neck of the world, I would always say, trust the local forecasters first before looking at a global provider, they always have the local knowledge to turn an easy to see trend into actual detail. Your lot are: http://www.meteo.pt/ but their site seems very slow at the moment.

Cheers

Great bit of free advertising though, the Metcheck guy was interviewed on BBC Breakfast, lunchtime news, evening news etc...

I too am very sceptical about long range forecasts, but there is an unusual amount of berries on the bushes and hedgerows this year. I was talking to a tree surgeon friend of mine about this, and they had noticed this too.

Just a thought.......

People say this every year and also the opposite. The weather is dictated by so many changing factors that I don't believe it can be forecast that accurately.

Metcheck looks like an interesting site and they are forecasting SE winds up to 31 mph tomorrow in my area, the Met Office says up to 70 mph, it will be interesting to see what happens!

The past two weeks have helped Met check, although it can hardly be considered the worst winter ever.

Hello

Well, woke up this morning and 10cm of snow. Delightful.

Just about to head of to London, but I don't think I'll get very far.

I'm sure there was something on the News last week stating that it had been the MILDEST winter for years - Then it snowed for a week in Aberdeenshire - Which was nice

Until we get into the next Ice Age! After the Gulf Stream stops because of the melting Arctic ice.
