Default M2 camera warning

Folks,
Got this through this morning, which I've attached unedited.
It came to me direct from the camera partnership. Not a hoax. You have been warned!

Safety Camera Partnership Issues Warning About Temporary M2 Speed Limit

Motorists are being warned about a temporary 50mph speed limit, which will be in place on the east and westbound carriageways of the M2, between Sittingbourne and Faversham during resurfacing road works. Speed cameras will be enforcing the limit from Monday 18 October.

Speed Check Services, the manufacturers of the SPECS digital system, have been chosen to supply safety cameras throughout the works area. The SPECS system calculates a vehicle’s average speed from the time it takes to pass between pairs of safety cameras. These cameras can be up to six miles apart. To avoid prosecution drivers must observe the 50mph speed limit throughout the whole roadworks, not just at the camera sites. SPECS removes the risk from drivers who brake hard at fixed camera sites and then accelerate once they have passed the camera.

As SPECS is not reliant on the use of flash photography, drivers who break the speed limit will not see the customary flash from the cameras. The cameras will, however, be bright yellow.

The temporary speed limit has been authorised by the Highways Agency in conjunction with Kent Police and is supported by the Kent & Medway Safety Camera Partnership.

Rachel Moon, Communications Officer for the Kent & Medway Safety Camera Partnership, said: “The 50mph limit is there for the safety of both motorists and the workmen on site. We urge all drivers to respect the temporary speed limit until the works are complete. The message is clear – if you choose to break the temporary legal limit you run the risk of getting a speeding ticket and points on your driving licence.”

Motorists are reminded that the temporary 50mph speed limit – which is clearly signed – applies at all times of the day and night including weekends whether workmen are on site or not. This is for a number of reasons:

· Enforcing the speed limit during the day but not at night will only confuse motorists, and there will be some nights when contractors will be working at the roadside with heavy machinery.

· Even if traffic cones are not in place over night there may still be ramps where the road is unfinished.

· The temporary road surface may have low skid resistance – coupled with poor weather conditions this could prove dangerous.

· There may be no road markings (white lines) or cat’s eyes.

· Drivers may be hesitating if junctions or turnings have been temporarily closed.

· To physically cover and uncover the signs and cameras of an evening and morning would endanger the lives of the workforce.

-end-

To be honest that seems pretty reasonable of them. the justification for their use is a good one.

I hate cameras but I can see the safety issue for having them at sites like that.

Just got to get rid of the ones on the A43 now. You know, on a run from Pontefract to Southampton (225 miles odd) the two southbound and one northbound truvelos on the A43 are the only speed cameras I pass..

Anybody know what the deal with these are now the roadworks have gone?
Appear to be no "yellow" cameras there - although there are some green "traffic master style" ones that are allegedly specs.
