Default Why does my sweat smell pissy?

When you get old like PSLewis you almost have a right, an expectation to smell pissy. People excuse it, almost expect it...But all the same are grateful when you've gone away.
My problems a little different.
When I go to the gym I work out hard. Very hard. No big deal but I've become aware that as my workout goes on my sweat is smelling pretty nasty.
A 'hum da vee' of ****. WTF? I have to try and create an exclusion zone around me by voluntarily moving away when someone comes close by.
I don't want to be known as the guy who smells of ****. Even worse to be described as such and have other people say "Oh yeah him, Pissy man"
And then laugh. Grateful not to be me.
No. I'm not having it. I have my standards. They are higher than the smell of ****. Normal BO would be good enough for me right now.
I feel a need to add at this point this pissy pong does not carry on, prevail, before or after the gym. Just during intensive exercise.
I have full control of my bladder. My stools are firm and well coloured. My eyes are bright and my tail is long.
Whats going on? Suggestions?

Sweat contains ammonia the same as ****, so when it gets a bit stale it smells pissy. According to my old PE teacher, anyway.

Don't know, but are you on the Atkins diet (or do you have a high protien/low carb diet)? I've heard that Atkins can make the breath pong, so perhaps a "sub-Atkins" diet can have similar effects but with the by-products getting out through the sweat glands rather than the breath?

Now that is a great reply. Don't know if it's true but it appeals to me. Gives some comfort.
No Atkins diet. Just sensible eating. True I may not drink enough. I'll try to drink a good amount before the next workout and see if that helps.

High protein and not enough water as some guys mention. If you are training hard you must drink loads of water and well beyond your thirst.

I get it from time to time, too.

After a night on the **** and a heavy gym sesh. Just a lack of fluids.

You can't beat that smell of bleach.

It will take a while to stop smelling as your skin has many layers of fat holding many different toxins etc, you will find that if you are overweight then you will smell more. as you get fitter and eat less crap and drink PLENTY of water then the smell will slowly subside whilst you sweat, have you ever noticed how fat people smell a bit stronger when working out near to them ??

hope this helps

This explains it in relatively basic terms:

Exactly, all your impurities are more concentrated meaning you will smell more, its like pouring a bucket of water over where someone has pissed as the water will dilute it to make it less concentrated so it doesnt smell if you know what i mean

Urine contains mainly urea rather than ammonia. Ammonia comes from bacteria breaking down the urea in urine which is why fresh wee doesn't smell much. As far as I am aware fish are the only animals to excrete ammonia as a direct product of metabolism.

When I go to the gym I work out hard. Very hard.

....forget the gym, you should write voice over scripts for Jean Claude Van Damme movies, you'd make a fortune

Don't know if it's relevant, but maggots give off ammonia when they sweat, I know, my missus always complains when they have been in the fridge for more than a week

Perhaps your "tail" is sweating

Yeah, meat eating maggots excrete ammonia as a by product from breaking down protein. Aquatic insects (or sometimes just the larvae) tend to also be ammonotelic.

Land based animals tend to excrete urea or uric acid in the case of birds (as Scooby paintwork will attest! ).

I am going to definately drink a good amount an hour or so before a workout, try and get really hydrated & see if it makes a difference.

You should be drinking 2 litres of water (not liquid: tea/coffee/coke etc) a day. Try that and see if there's an improvement

Does your **** smell of sweat?

If so - where exactly on your body is the 'sweat' coming from?

An average guy should drink 2-3 litres of water a day normally. If you are working out heavily, you can lose up to 1 litre of water per hour, so you need to compensate for this by drinking more.

Avoid caffeinated drinks such as tea/coffee or Coke and avoid alcohol. These are all diuretic which make you lose water more quickly. The last thing you need in the morning after 8 hours of fluid deprivation is have a cuppa!
