Default What does De Facto mean?

Within the context of filling in a Visa application for Australia?

Under marital status it says
married
divorced
de facto
seperated
engaged
widowed
never married

I think it would mean you are "between statuses" e.g. in the midst of divorce

Doesn't it just mean you're in a committed relationship with your partner. Don't know if it's the same as just living together

Found this:-

"De facto relationship – Australian law also recognises de facto spouses. De facto spouses live together as husband and wife but are not legally married. For migration purposes, de facto relationship spouses must have been in that relationship for 12 months."

Actually in hindsight I suppose in the literal sense it means "not official" so it be any marital arrangement you consider effectual that may not/will not be recognised by a court....

"de facto" means something similar to "in practice" or "in reality".

it is used to make a distiction between what the letter of the law says and what happens in reality.

de facto

adj : existing in fact whether with lawful authority or not; "de facto segregation is as real as segration imposed by law"; "a de facto state of war" [syn: actual, factual] [ant: de jure] adv : in reality or fact; "the result was, de facto, a one-party system"
