From what I've read, best ones are from Pioneer, Panasonic and Tosh.
Pioneer & Tosh both support DVD-RW whereas Panny is restricted to DVD-RAM. Some of the high-end ones offer DV-in so you can capture from a camcorder to the disk, edit the footage and then burn directly onto DVD.
Some even connect to a PC to allow you to do the editing on the PC.
I would have went for the Panny, but I wanted DVD-RW support. The Tosh X32 is an excellent machine, but I've heard it's hard to get hold of right now.

Im looking at buying the xds32 tosh with the dvd-rw and 80Gb HD.
For £390 for the multiregion version its a bargain.
Reason im plumbing for this is the i-link input so i can attach my dv-cam and burn straight to dvd (or hd edit then dvd). A lot do not have i-link in so you would have to go in analog and convert back to digital and loose quality.
Pioneer has i-link but that model is more exsepnsive, Panasonic do also but its 600 notes.
Sony is about to launch a monster with a 160gb drive and ethernet port but i think this will be about £800.
In the £400 category there is nothing to compete with the tosh.

There's a new 400GB one due out from Panny (or maybe Pioneer). Retail is expected to be around £1250.
I did consider getting one with i-Link/Dv-In, but then I have a DVD writer and IEEE1394 on my PC, so I though why pay for the editing features I already have on my PC.

Very impressed so far. Connections etc are superb, supports progressive output for my plasma tv, can record one program whilst playing back another, timeslip recording (pause live video) etc. I've even got it controlling my sky box so I can program it to change to the appropriate sky channel from the timer setup screen...

I have a Phillips DVD recorder with no hard drive - laser disc has been replaced twice in past 14 months.
Good when it works but reliability awful and a recurring problem with Phillips machines of this type - easily found on web searches.
DO NOT BUY A PHILLIPS
