Israel - resorting to terrorism?
So, allegedly the forces of Israel have detonated a car bomb in Damascus in Syria to kill a Hamas leader.

Is this terrorism?
According to the UN International Convention for the Suppression of Terrorist Bombings 1998, Art 2 (1): Any person commits an offence within the meaning of this Convention if that person unlawfully and intentionally ... detonates an explosive ...in ...a place of public use (defined as "those parts of any building, land, street, waterway or other location that are accessible or open to members of the public,")...With the intent to cause death or serious bodily injury...
And under Art. 5: Each State Party shall adopt such measures as may be necessary, including, where appropriate, domestic legislation, to ensure that criminal acts within the scope of this Convention, in particular where they are intended or calculated to provoke a state of terror in the general public or in a group of persons or particular persons, are under no circumstances justifiable by considerations of a political, philosophical, ideological, racial, ethnic, religious or other similar nature and are punished by penalties consistent with their grave nature.
If the guy's car in a public street is viewed as a public place, I could argue that they're guilty.
I know some might say they've been doing this in Gaza/West Bank for years, but the above convention basically excludes acts within one state (yeah I know it's disputed but that's a different issue). This time it's clearly outside.
What do you reckon?

the perception of "legitimate target" is a false one - depends where you sit. The IRA claim the Brighton bomb was against a "legitimate target" but the government class it as terrorism.
Americans have the nice term "collateral damage" to cover the death/mutilation of innocents when they attack a "legitimate target".
Its all a crock of ****

The Israelis under Sharon are never going to get any better - yes its terrorism but then look at Sharon's military history. He is no better than the terrorists which is why him getting in power was the worst thing that could have happened as far as the peace process is concerned.
Israel and Palestine are never going to be civil towards each other until an Israeli leader who is for a peace process is installed. Sharon currently is the problem and needs to be removed from power before any progress can be made.

In answer to Brendans initial question, I would agree its a terrorist attack as its an attempt to put pressure on the Syrian goverment. Fighting fire with fire?
