Default Digital SLR Cameras - New Player

Konica Minolta have announced the spec. for their new DigiSLR Camera,

The Maxxum 7D (Dynax 7D) digital SLR

Pentax also announce one:-

The *istDS digital SLR - stupid name, so deserves to fail!

Looks good, no prices as yet - but will put pressure on the Nikon D70 and sink the Canon EOS300D still deeper

Could be interesting!

Pete

Agree, I have a Minolta S304 that I paid £500 for!! 3 years ago! Its a superb camera!

THATS why I am dragging my feet over the SLR cameras - lots being introduced at sub £1000 - many MUST fail and be sold off cheap.

The Canon 10D's look remarkable value now at around £500 secondhand

Got a 300D really like it. It does all I need a camera to do, superb results, I did buy just a body and then a better spec Canon lens though. Might consider changing to a 20D body though.

You dont need to have the latest gimmicks to take great pictures. I was a sports photographer for many years and just had a few Nikon FM2's never needed F2, F3 or F4's

What? You started the other thread that ran for pages, and you STILL haven't got one? You'll be in a box before you get one at that rate!:

Cool

Or, you could go for Nikons new baby, the D2X.

Specs are...........

12.4 Mpxls @ 5 frames/sec. (1.5x crop factor)- 21 JPGs or 15 NEFs continuous shots
or 6.8 Mpxls @ 8 frames/sec. (2x crop factor) - 39 JPGs or 25 NEFs continuous shots
New CMOS sensor (still APS sized w/ less noise)
ISO 100-800 plus H1 & H2 (guessing 1600 & 3200)
In-Camera Multiple Exposure Capability
37ms shutter lag... REALLY FAST!
3 additional colour spaces
GPS support (yes GPS, overkill, but how cool and gadgety?)
and an optional WT-2 wireless transmitter (802.11b/g compatible)

Price unknown as yet, but you can guarantee it will be above what mere mortals (or non professional) can afford.

Over to you Canon..................

Shutter lag - is that the time between pressing the button and the shutter opening?

What is the shutter lag on stuff like the Coolpix range, and the all-hallowed D70?

Tried my dad's digicam (Dimage 7i) a year ago, and TBH hated it, as there was almost a full second delay between pressing the button and getting the photo. Try taking photos of impatient dogs with that! It's put me off getting one for the moment.

Tiggs, I was about to ask the same question

Pete's just on one of his crusades I think to introduce and greatly confuse the Scoobynet public on the state of play of DSLRs. He knows we all respect his opinion really highly so he can happily sit in front of his computer leading us all a merry dance

So come on Pete, what should we be buying today?

Actually the Nikon D70 isn't that fast for a snap shot being around 0.3-0.5 seconds to gain AF lock then shutter release. However, if prefocused it comes down to a more respectable 0.12 seconds.

Cool

Indeed, and not just longitude and latitude, it gives altitude as well.

"Ah yes, well I took this one 8435 ft up the Matterhorn as a matter of fact..." *awe*

GPS is bloody handy for those people who no longer take notes when taking shots on a walking trips etc.

Can also see it being very useful to people like estate agents, surveyors etc.

That would be a secondhand Canon 10D then! (TODAYS Top Tip!)

When I bought my Ricoh KR10 in 1982 it was, and still is, a superb camera - it can still take a stunning picture.

That is value for money and was a wise move ..... todays DSLR's are not fully developed yet and I don't fancy throwing £1000 away over 3 years!

Good grief, I've JUST got over the horror of losing £13,000 on the Scoobie over 4 years!

I don't like losing money like that! Hence my mature caution

The D2X is around £3500 which is actually a very competitve price considering it's spec. I'm just waiting for a review on DPReview to see if it's performance matches up to the spec.
