MOBO Awards
Reggae stars Elephant Man and Vybz Kartel have had their Music of Black Origin (Mobo) nominations withdrawn in a row about homophobic lyrics.
Mobo organisers had demanded the pair apologise for anti-gay lyrics in some of their early songs after complaints from gay rights campaigners.

Sounds reasonable.
Then further down.
"The last thing Mobo wants to do is encourage prejudice," said a spokesman.
I'm sure if a Music Of White Origin Awards show was proposed then it'd cause an uproar.

What like by having a seperate awards ceremony where white/yellow/red (etc.) music isn't allowed?

He is making music no one forces you or anyone else to listen to it, if you don't like it don't buy it simple!!!
We all know that things like this never really happened about 4-5 years ago......: Whatever_
It just begs the question; what next???

Hey, don't move the debate. This isn't about stopping them making the music or preventing people from buying/listening to it. It's about not nominating/awarding them at a very public awards ceremony because of their frankly homophobic views & lyrics.

I have no problem with the MOBO's. But if there were MOWO's there would be outrage and accusations of racism.
It is this sort of thing that causes more racial hatred than anything else.

Waht creates racial hatred is people making racist issues out of a situation where there are none.

Personally, I find it a little sad.
Outrage about homophobic lyrics and nothing about similar artists advocating gun crime.
Jamaican radio stations banned any records advocating the use of firearms and this did not make headline news.
Choice FM also refused to air "gun lyrics" and nothing said.
But talk about Boom Bye Bye and it all goes horrible wrong.
Guess its ok when they're killing each other ...
Flame suit on as I must have upset somebody.

What I don't get is why they even need an awards ceremony to honour artists who make music of black origin? I can accept that different genres of music would want different awards ceremonies, but to segregate music by the colour of the people who started it, that's unneccessary and pointless. For example, what possible musical likeness is there of Jazz to Rap?? None. So why have an awards ceremony pretending there is.
Then again, maybe it's the only way Beenie Man will ever win anything.
In fact, I think I'll start a new awards ceremony: "Music from bands whose name begins with the letter B"!

Personally I can't see what the issue over a few homophobic lyrics is. Black culture is consistently portayed as being very heterosexual (see above) so with homosexuality being polar opposite to this its's hardly suprising that some MOBO artists create songs with homophobic lyrics.
Yes, it may not sit well in our intergrated society of today (PC rules) but if the MOBO's represent black origins then homophobia, however distasteful, can be expected to be used as song-subject matter somewhere down the line.

Anyway, I've said my bit on this countless times, but here goes again...
It isn't so much that they single out MOBO that bothers me, but the fact that sandal wearing lentil muching tree-huggers from Tunbridge Wells would be up in arms if someone started the MOWO awards. Jeepers, I'm boring myself now...

Shame that nearly every RnB video/song portrays women as mere trophies for said artist to use as he sees fit. That's ok I guess

Indeed, the drivel that is being regurgitated under the guise of music is somewhat distressing.
