Phil Collins - Arghhhhh!
Was round at a mate's fixing his computer last night and whilst performing hardware surgery on their dining room table his wife sat down to watch Phil Collins - But Seriously Live (or something like that anyway).
The DVD is a film of one of his concerts and I can honestly say it's a long time since I've seen/heard something so bad. He struts around the stage trying to act at least 10 years younger than he actually is wearing a lilac suit (still thinks he's in Miami Vice perhaps??) perspiring badly under the arms - very 'Rock Star' - NOT!! Then there's the fact that every single backing singer he uses in the concert is a way better singer than he is and it really shows.
The highlights are of course the songs themselves - I had forgotten just what over commercialised turgid drivel this guy pumped out. His massacring of a Motown classic ought to be a hanging offence and his cringeworthy song about racsim (Colour I think it's called - how original ) is excruciating.
The best though has to be 'Another Day in Paradise' - a song about the plight of the homeless - makes you want to be sick not because of the subject matter, but because it feels so like someone desperately trying to appear like they have a social conscience. Bear in mind that this is the guy who threatened to leave the country in 1997 if Labour came to power (the hope that he would do so probably helped contribute to their landslide victory ) - makes the social conscience bit seem all the less plausible.
Come to think of it does anyone know if he actually did emigrate and if so whether it was down to Labour getting in - probably not as it's just one of those stupid things some people say whenever we get an election approaching.

Peter Gabriel - now there's a man with a real social conscience and a great musician/songwriter too.

I hate Phil Collins music with a passion. I blame the parents
I'm sure my daughter will hate US garage (no, not that garage, the garage before that ), progressive hard house and anything involving Norman Jay, but such is life

I agree too about the Gabriel early Genesis stuff
got em on Vinyl
including a mispressing of Foxtrot, which has basically 2 A sides, but the grooves for the B side are correct for the tunes that should be there, but they are the A-side tunes !!

Well I think he's pretty good! (runs for cover............)
As a teenager of the 80's my first introduction to Genesis was 'Invisible Touch' which I still rate as one of my fave albums. PC epitomises the 80's - if you weren't then then you might not appreciate what it was like (rather like I don't understand the fascination over the Beatles cos I wasn't there when it was all happening).
Solo release wise - he has soooo much more soul in his voice than any of these RnB, Soul 'divas' today (and he ain't a bad drummer either). Listen to 'Long long way to go' and tell me you don't feel the slightest bit moved.
Phil

Just to confirm - the fat little bugger with a ton of dosh made from whining on and on and on and on about his divorce...lives in a large house on the shores of Lac Leman (otherwise known as Lake Geneva).
Can someone come and take him back to the UK please ? We're done with him. Thanks in advance.

I was very much there for the 80's and love some of the music from that decade, but Phil Collins music was always at best commercial, at worst cynical and as for his voice - a grating whine as far as I am concerned - can you have a soulful grating whine?
As for Genesis the Invisible Touch album is an over commercialised cliched mess - listen to Selling England by the Pound or The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway to hear real masterpieces from this once great band. Plus you get Gabriel's pasionate and controlled voice rather then the 80's whiny rock vocal of Collins.
Sure he's a good drummer, but why like other drummers doesn't he just keep his mouth shut and drum?

OK Tiggs, instead of commercial try bland, simplistic, formulaic, grating ****e from a guy pretending to care about the rest of the world when all he really cares about is himself and his bank balance.
