Default Comments on films I watched recently: Dogma & Magnolia

Both these films came highly recommended by friends of mine who thought I would love these movies!

Dogma - Slow, cack, funny moments, but not that clever! If I want a funny film about religion, it's Life of Brian for me everytime!!

Magnolia - Oh my God, how slow was that films, with some touching scenes, clever cinematography, but a story that touched various lives, but didn't intermingle! The only good bits was the beginning when you see "urban internet myths" brought to life on the screen. Stopping it there would have saved me watching 3 hours of incidental clap-trap!

Am I trying to read too much into these films, or have I missed the point completely?

Other recent dissapointing films:

The Bourne Supremacy - badly cut with poor story line
The Village - say no more!

That said I did enjoy:

Spiderman 2 and quite an old film Family Man (which I had never seen before)

recent acquisitions for me on DVD reviewed:

I-Robot: very, very good film, I like the way the plot forms in a donnie darko style fashion, definately had asimov written all over it so I guess it was a good transition.

Spiderman2: escapism but fun, fell asleep and missed the last 20 minutes (tbc)

day after tomorrow: good film, very good effects and liked the plot. shyt ending though, too abrupt.

tonight I have the chronicles of riddick and open water so will check back tomorrow

I'm going to watch Hellboy tonight.

I've read the other thread on it, so it sounds like I'm in for a treat (finally!)

I'm going to give I-Robot a go next week and possibily The Day After Tomorrow.

I've heard The Chronicles of Riddick is ok, but it tries too hard to capture the same feel as LOTR, but fails due to the characters lacking depth! Pitch Black was a good movie though!

Dogma is one of my all-time fav' movies (along with KS's other efforts) - witty, vulgar, violent and taking a well-considered pop at religion in a contemporary setting - CLASS!

Expect Markus to be along shortly!..................

It did have a pop at religion, but I didn't find it witty, vulgar or violent! Must be far too high brow for me!!!

My all time faves are probably:

Goodfellas
The Usual Suspects
The Shawshank Redemption
Reservoir Dogs
True Romance

For pure entertainment value:

Any of the Die Hards
Dumb and Dumber
Uncle Buck

I do like movies, but it seems that I've watched a lot of stuff recently that doesn't float my boat!

I think you need to be an ex-catholic to appreciate Dogma. I think it is one of the funniest films ever.

Pulp Fiction fries to be too clever and some scenes are far too long. That said said I enjoyed it but I can't watch it any time, unlike Reserviour Dogs, which is gritty, with clever story telling and a good mix of violence. I find Jackie Brown a much easier to watch and a better story compared to Pulp Fiction!

I forgot to mention Fight Club, Donnie Darko, The Butterfly Effect and Memento in my fave list!

I liked SWAT, it's a good old fashioned action movie, similar to ones I grew up with in the late eighties and early ninties. (The Arnie and Sly type movies! )

My better half went to a Catholic school, but she didn't enjoy it either!

Oh yeah, just to add I thought that Magnolia was utter tripe! Cannot for the life of me see why anyone raves about that movie. Perhaps I'm a simpleton but I just didn't see what the fuss was about.

I'm going to resist the obvious reply ( ) and just say that I thought Magnolia was brilliant. But I'll also admit it's probably a bit too arthouse for many. Dogma was OK, but not a great film. The same director's "Clerks" is way better.
