Altohugh these days I tend more towards the feeling that she is a plant. Channel 4 have sent her to the BBC with the sole intention of making 'All Gob & No Neck' McCall look good

It is a way of emphasising, or perhaps "bolding" a word where bold is not available - ie, in basic ASCII. Of course, bold is available on SN, so bold would be preferred
