Question Rapist wins 7 mill on the lotto!!!!!!!

*UPROAR*

..but why,no-one complains when rapists and murderers lose on the lottery therefore contributing to the winnings of supposedly "decent" law abiding citizens,so why complain when they win.

Of course, they should firstly confiscate £360,000,which is the cost of an 18 year prison sentance.

According to Pete & Geoff on Virgin the money will do him no good inside, what he needed to win were 7 million batteries or phonecards!

I can see it from both sides:

1. There is no law against him winning the lottery, so why the big fuss. Surely there has been other criminals who have won. (Remember, if you've been convicted of a driving offence you are a criminal!) So what's the big deal?

2. Yes, there is no justice in the world and the victim's family must feel totally sick that this man has done a terrible thing and is now going to have enough money to live very comfortably for the rest of his life.

**** happens. The world is full of injustices. Just hope the rapist has seen the error of his ways and maybe donates a load of his cash to the victim or support group etc. Don't know the rapist in question to know whether it's likely or not.

As with RichWalk, I'm curious about how the religious sect interpret this. My guess is none of them will reply (stirs pot ) as wrong things do happen and people get away with it. It's bad but true unfortunately.

No, most driving offences ie speeding dont give you a criminal record.

I would still rather be me with no money than him with all his millions

Cool

You cannot purchase pools or premium bonds (or maybe it's claim the winnings, I can't remember) if you have a criminal record. Unfortunately, this law was made before the advent of Lotto.

Let's hope it is addressed soon.

I think policing that would be a nightmare! Who's going to check whether or not you've got a criminal record when you go to your local Sainsburys to buy a ticket? Will they have little photofits behind the counter of known crims in the area???

The pools and premium bonds are not anonymous, whereas the lottery is. If it was a big deal and you were a criminal with a trusting mind, give the winning ticket to your wife and then she could claim. Not enforceable in my mind.....

Yes, he was jailed in 1989 for 18 years. He was staying at a bail hostel when he bought the ticket. He won't be in jail for much longer.

Policing it would be easy - if you restrict the check to jackpot winners.

May be a bit more difficult if you wanna check everyone who wins a tenner .............

But what justification would there be to not allow criminals to win the Lotto? It's not like they're profited from being a criminal is it?

But morally, it's kinda sick that a convicted rapist (who in some countries would be executed) can walk away with millions, no?

I'd imagine that this is extremely unlikely....

He was jailed for a SERIES of sex attacks in the 70's and 80's before being jailed for life in 1989 for attempting to rape a 60 year old woman in a public park!

His previous includes one rape, two attempted rapes and three indecent assaults.

He is a monster and an obvious threat to ALL women.

The main problem with this, is how unfair the world can be at times.
Numerous lives have been ruined by this guy and he gets rewarded with £7M.

There is no chance that this pathological sex pest will change his ways, and he should have been put to sleep years ago, but don't get me started on Capital Punishment!

Anyway, apparently he can only "withdraw" £2 a day in prison, so it'll take him
9589 years to spend it all!

So thats at least 6 people looking to sue him for £1.17m each in damages then ?

Then the prison service will want him to pay for his board and lodgings

Hopefully there won't be much left by the time he gets out

Since when did anyone care that criminals were purchasing Lottery tickets?

Given that, demographically, a high proportion of Lottery players are of other than socials groups A and B, and that, statistically, there is a greater prevalence of criminality amongst this social group than in the higher tiers, I'd think it extremely unfair if criminals didn't win the Lottery.

OK, there's a fuss about it now, but it was only ever a matter of time.

As for the guy buying it whilst on day-release; he's nearing the end of a sentence, and guess what? ALL long-term prisoners are now rehabilitated before release, which will usually mean tranfer to medium-category prison, then to an open, as they are gradually reintroduced to the community. I don't partake myself, but I guess buying a Lottery ticket is a pretty usual thing to do for any member of the public, no more or less exciting than opening a bank account, working out how to use a cashpoint (bear in mind this guy's been away for two decades) etc.

Does he deserve the money? Well, he's a scurrious piece of ****, and the money won't make him any better than he was before. I sincerely hope the victims sue him for all they can.

What about that bloke who won (IIRC) 3.5 million and was a known car thief/ringer.

Mind you, at least on this occasion, the bloke is already in jail. Unlike that CHAV from Norfolk (name escapes me) ....

I agree with talizman and garyK.

I wonder if those who mentioned it can explain exactly this has got to do with religion anyway.

Apparently as the law stands criminals in jail are allowed to buy Lottery tickets. In the light of this a decent government *could* act to change the legislation.

Shame we don't have one.

It hasn't got anything to do with religion directly, think somebody was just trying to make the point that in many religions "god is good, loving, just etc etc". The argument being, if this is so, how the hell can a rapist end up winning the lottery. TBH this is more a question of whether you belive in free will or pre-determination in the context of a deity but that's a different thread...
