Transfering money abroad-Ebay problem
I've just won an ebay auction in germany. Whilst having one of my muppet moments I bid on the item thinking the seller accepted paypal - he doesn't!
He does accept a money transfer from IBAN and/or BIC(Swift).
Before I start trying to get out of the auction - has anyone used either of these systems?
If it means giving out some bank details then I'm just about to close an account so I can use that.
BTW Can anyone recomend a better German to English online translator than Google?
My german's very rusty but some of the stuff its coming out with is just plan odd!

IBAN (international bank account number) or SWIFT are quite normal (and safe) means of moving money between bank accounts. costs are £15-£25.
You are only giving out the same details that you are on giving out on your 'paper' cheques - they can't clear out your account!!! I've used it several times (biggest purchase was my 'scooby' from Holland!!) - no problems

If your paying you don't give any details.
He gives you an IBAN No. and a SWIFT/BIC number then you call your bank and transfer.
You will also need his name, bank name and bank location (preferably address)
I just did one (Portugal) and it cost £17. Arrived next day though which was impressive.

Bank transfers or Überweisung is very very common in Germany and not something to worry about passing on bank account details is an everyday accourance here, the Germans are a very trusting race and I transfer money around with perfect strangers all the time with no problems. But as you are doing the paying you will have no problem using IBAN /SWIFT/BIC but bear in mind the exchange rates and bank charges in doing so. IBAN/SWIFT/BIC is free to use unless you do it in different currencies ie Pounds to Euros or vice versa.
