Air coolers - any good?
#2
good question! These were going for £99 in currys, but were 'evaporative air coolers' not aircon (which were £200)
They looked the same, and had exhaust hoses, and claim to lower the temperature by 7 degrees.
at that price I'd pop for one to avoid the heat of last night.

Considering one too - the other half's 35 weeks pregnant and the heat is killing her esp. at night (and me cos all the covers end up on my side)
Anyone know what those aerosol sprays are like?

Yeah, air coolers are a complete waste of time!
What is it for? The portable aircon units aren't much better for heavy(ish) duty. I tried 3 different models up to 8,000 BTU in our server room whilst I had a proper split cooler/condenser system installed. Each one of the three would periodically give up cooling and start blowing warm air! When they did this they were neutral at best (i.e. extracting as much heat as they were creating) and at worst they were actually adding heat to the room!
We now have a 20,000 BTU split system that keeps the room at 20 degrees without even trying and its almost silent! (On a hot day the uncooled room was about 32 degrees!)
If it is just for a room at home then a portable unit would probably be ok, although they can be a bit noisy.

I wouldn't recommend a portable aircon unit to be used while to sleep, as ajm mentioned, they can be noisy.
We had one at work for a few days and we found it too loud to work, let alone sleep.
It got replaced a few months later with a proper aircon system.
