Default Cheap beer in the UK?

I need to buy a large quanitity of beer, and although it's cheap in France, are there suppliers in the UK who can deliver say 240 bottles of lager?

I've already looked at Tescos, Majestic, etc.

Cheers
Andy

10 cases = 240 bottles at £129.90!

Stella in France is better anyway because it normally comes from the Brussels brewery whereas the Brit stuff is brewed in the UK by Whitbread and I find it disgusting.
I've yet to find a foreign beer brewed under licence in the UK that tastes anything like the original.

I'd also ask some independent off licences what deals they can do. Many of them do the leg work to France for you.

If you pre-order £300 worth of booze from Majestic (in France) they will pay for your car ferry crossing (£500 worth for a van!)

Tesco are doing an offer on Stella, £8.98 for 20 bottles (250ml) £107.76 for 240 bottles. £47.86 more!

Cheap beer is cheap beer at the end of the day but IMHO do your guests a favour and don't get those stubby 250 ml french style bottles. Get cans or 660mL bottles IMHO so people can mingle without needing to duck back to the kitchen / garage for a refill about every 10 mins. I suppose a few 250's knocking around are OK if you have any drivers or elderly relatives that just fancy a taste without sinking a pint but if it is for the lads I would not bother. 'Tis a pet hate of mine those little feckin' things. You wouln't serve wine in a whisky tumbler so don't put beer in a wine sized container.

I know what it's like when you go somewhere and the cans are free, it's easy to leave them half finished and get another. That was my thinking about the stubbies, but I personally prefer the 330ml bottles.

I'm considering Carlsberg Export 330ml bottles at £7.99 for 24 bottles (stubbies are £6.99) I'd rather not have Stella (at a big social event) even though it is cheaper!!

From Majestic in France in case people are interested.

Order a keg.... something to look into!!

Stella is not brewed by Whitbread but by Interbrew in Magor, South Wales.

Whitbread sold their brewery network to Interbrew. Differerent name but they still brew the same crud.

I wouldnt call UK Stella crud. After 25 years of sampling it I find it OK. Not as good as the European stuff maybe but better than most lagers in the UK.

And what may your tipple be gsm

Don't know about 25 years, they've only been brewing Stella in the UK for about 6 years, I think.

I'm not too fussy or have one favourite. Out of the standard stuff I like plenty of different beers including Stella (Brussels brewed), Asahi, Sapporo, Birra Moretti, Nastro Azzruro, Cobra and even a lot of the cheapy non-brand French beers you get from the superstores. Also ales like Speckled Hen and Honey Dew or a budget Cotes Du Rhones from Tesco etc. I don't touch spirits.
As long as the beers/ales are optimum chilled, I'm happy.
And...I don't want to sound like a snob but I just can't drink out of a can, it ruins the taste.

but the little bottles are only half the size of a can so you might be paying double for the cans here but you are getting twice as much beer

GSM,

I agree with you about cans ruining the taste of beer! For personal consumption, I always look for a deal on bottles!

Steve,

You may pay double or maybe a little less for a can, but I know more of it will be wasted (people putting down cans, forgetting and getting a new one) so I would end up having to spend nearly double the money for beer that won't get drunk!!

I think the compromise is 330ml bottles!

Cheers Chip, already checked out Tesco, Sainsburys, Waitrose... and I will be popping into the local Asda incase they have a deal on there.

Thanks guys, all this help is much appreciated and hopefully a decision will be made before the big day!

BTW Majestic in the UK have Carlsberg Export (or Rolling Rock, which isn't as nice IMHO) in 330ml bottles for £12 (box of 24, so 50p per bottle!!) I know when Tesco offer them, they can be as little as £9.99 for a box!!

Interbrew maybe, but Whitbread were brewing it for many years before that.In fact from the late 70's.

You're right, but probably only draft for pubs, I'm sure the UK stuff hasn't been in the green bottles that long.

Euro-tunnel; go to Auchan near the Grand Synth exit from the M-way in Dunkirk. Stella's nearly always a good price, same with Bierre 33 and Kronenbourg. Also look for Kronenbourg 1664 "Divas" - 75cl and 5.9 by volume for about 85p each.

Have done the beer trip about 30 times and can safely say DO NOT go to Eastenders as it is total ****e.

Auchan in Bolougne is best. Good restaurants as well.

Andy, does it have to be branded stuff?

Makro often have stubbies of French or Belgian beer in which is very drinkable. For Stella etc they aren't usually any cheaper than Tesco etc.

Yes, I probably have too much time on my hands, but in the link below there is an Excel spreadsheet, showing price per case, price per bottle, etc trying to find the best deal.

I'm settling on the Tescos deal as I have a clubcard!!

Cheap Beer Spreadsheet (5kb)

Easily ammended, just as bottle/can size, price per crate, quantity and required boxes and it does the rest for you!!
