Anyone know where i can get hold of a transformer to hard wire into 12v car battery supply, that will then give the required 5v to power ipaq?
Don't want the cigarete lighter option.
Cheers,
Gav

Cheers Olly,
I have the kane car pilot satnav. So have holders and cigarete power cord.
Trying to hard wire it so as not to have lots of cigarette adapters. Looked at taking the cigarette socket apart and using ciruit board inside as transformer, but this was going to be messy. Just looking for a small transformer that i can wire in.

The real dirty way is to wire in a cigar socket hidden behind the dash somewhere and just plug in to that. I gave up and pulled out the ashtray and put a 3 way cigar socket in the hole instead, fits nicely

Transformer is in cigar plug in mine.
Just got rid of 3 way cigar socket (from ashtray slot
)-but as a last resort i may hide it out of site behind dash. Having got everything else wired in, i was hoping to find a small transformer.

Only other thing I can think of is to "butcher" the cigar end of the cable, cut away as much as possible and solder on a couple of wires that connect to the car electrics. It'll look a bit like Frankenstein's monster, but if it is behind the dash it shouldn't matter too much. The other place to try is Maplins. I also found some place on line a while back that does a whole range of step down transformers from 12V to all sorts, but they were not cheap and were from a US based firm.

Maplin do a cigar lighter socket, a trailing type that you solder your own wires on, it was 99p when i bought mine a while ago. I bought it for my van, as Ford seem to think van drivers don't smoke or need to charge their phone, so they didn't fit a lighter socket.

Olly,
Looked at butchering cigar end, but not easy as fuse etc are held by suroundings. Need to make up a holder to stop it all shaking loose- too much hassel.
Sparkykev-need it to convert to 5v though or will melt ipaq + gps.
Frost1-looked on there but no joy.
Cheers
