Unhappy Is this a just bad luck or what!!!!!

Travelling down to Warwickshire from Liverpool on saturday on the M6 and start to hear horrendous noises coming from the car(Mitsubishi challenger),pulls over as the car justs stops.not being in any rescue organisation(FOOL that i am) i have to use emergency phone at side of motorway and what a profitable business that is recovery i mean!!I was at junc 16 and to get back to liverpool cost me £327 pounds!!!! £100 to get me off the motorway and £30 per junction!! Well if that wasnt bad enough i need a gearbox as my apparently smashed through the casing hence the noise and a new clutch.I have been quoted£1200 for a reconditioned gearbox and new clutch at a garage locally and a few people have said that its a good price.Opinions would be welcome off you guys asyou are in the know. Many thanks from a sad and skint girl!!!P.S. the car has only done 45,000 miles am i right in thinking thats not a lot of miles for the gearbox to go??

Wow - no matter WHAT the car is, the gearbox shouldn't have failed after only 45,000 miles. You use the clutch, right?

If it's going to cost you so much money, I'd definitely try to get a second opinion. It might cost you a few quid to get a mechanic to go and take a look at it wherever it is now, but hey - if you're planning on spending £1200 anyway...

Good luck!

1200 seems a bit excessive, try and get a few quotes from indipendant garages and try to talk them down a bit, also try bargain them of against each other.
What ever you do don't go with 'Mr Clutch' more hassle then they're worth

best bet would be to get a gearbox from a scrappy, but that may involve a bit of legwork.

hmm - blew my mini up (dropped a valve) on the M5 once - 200 yards north of the Exeter turn off --- Had to use the emergency phone. Truck that turned up set off (with mini on the back) and big ends went a mile later - he had to get another truck to tow him !

Cost me 100 quid to get towed to Bristol Services - Wanted another 300 to get me home (Staffordshire).... My Dad towed me with an allegro in the end, via the non-motorway route - Set off at 7pm and got home at 5am - Still - saved some money

Seems Motorway Towing is a good way to make cash !
