What are your favourite places in the UK?
I’m coming to the UK in 10 days, for 3 weeks, with the wife. The wife isn’t English, but loves England, though I think her experiences are limited to London (which she adores), Kent/Sussex, and Oxford.
We’re dropping the teenager off in Cumbria for a 3-week Outward Bound course, and then will pootle around the UK in a hire car trying to find nice bits, before we eventually go back to pick him up. No idea if we’ll go up to Edinburgh, across to Yorks, down to Bath… or all of them!
As SN has residents from all over the UK, how about you each list a couple of your favourite (public) places? Can be a bar, pub, park, viewpoint, museum, zoo, castle… anything. If you wanted to recommend to visitors to enjoy themselves in the UK, what would you recommend?
For me:
Surrey; Tea in Pembroke Lodge in Richmond Park, overlooking the Thames.
Middx; Harrow Hill (I was born there, but still quite impressive, with the School, St Mary’s, an’ all).
Kent; Leeds Castle (pricey), walking the dog around Bodiam Castle (free). Goudhurst is Fraightfully Pikterskew, but not sure I’d recommend visiting for more than 5 mins.
Sussex; Ditchling Beacon, and the only pub I can think of is the Warble in Tun (forgotten where but does great food).
Central London; never liked it much, but the museums in South Ken, the London Eye are winners; and RAF Hendon has a place in my childhood . Never been to Tate Modern.

A coupe of mine:
Day out in London - Grenwich Observatory and the National Maritime Museum (Dinner somewhere like Cafe Fish or Belgo)
Chester - Walking round the city walls (Lunch in "Moules a go go")
High Wycombe - Visit to the caves of "The Hellfire Club"
Northumbria - Head out from Newcastle towards Rothbury and then over to Alnwinton, you drive up onto the moors (single track, massive drops ) and then if you are lucky you can drive over the army firing range at Otterburn.

Would recommend the following:
Cornwall: Polzeath beach - it's in north cornwall, kind of between padstow/wadebridge.
Essex: Tropical Wings Butterfly and Bird Gardens - in South Woodham Ferrers, near Chelmsford. Has a big tropical house full of free-flying hummingbirds, butterflies, etc. Loads of reptiles, different parrots in gardens, birds of prey, goats, shetland ponies, wallabies, baby skunks, etc. They have free handling sessions of all the animals too - really interesting. You should check out their tea rooms too - they have the best ice cream sundaes and chocolate cake ever!!!!
Erm.........will post up other places when i think of them!

Tintagel- crazy castle split between some islands on the coast. If you've never been a must see IMHO
http://www.cornwall-online.co.uk/eng...e/tintagel.htm
You could also get to Padstow and enjoy some great seafood at one of Rick Steins places

Kernow- you know it makes sense!

Well, if you're already in Cumbria, then the Lake District is a must.
I've just come back from a long weekend in the Lakes. We stayed here. Superb hotel and fantastically quiet at night. A short drive or ~20 minutes walk down the road is the lovely hamlet of Satterthwaite. The Eagles Head pub is excellent (does accomodation too). As you're right in the middle of the Grizedale Forest, sample one of the walks which range from about 1 mile on tarmac paths to 8 or 9 miles over harder terrain. All will give you a chance to see some of the 80 or so forest sculptures (get a map for £3 from the Visitor Centre).

Leith Hill, Surrey. Great area for easy walking.
St. Michael's Mount. Very touristy but still worth a visit.
Obviously Exmoor, Dartmoor and Bodmin are all down there but probably very busy this time of year but you could also include the New Forest

Lunch at the Crannog in Fort William, after a nice drive through Glen Coe etc.
http://www.oceanandoak.co.uk/
Lunch at Creelers up in Broadford, Isle of Skye http://www.skye-seafood-restaurant.co.uk/
Eagle heights in Eynsford, Kent http://www.eagleheights.co.uk/ if you like birds of prey. Lunch afterwards at http://www.loch-fyne.com in Sevenoaks, or http://www.chapteronerestaurant.co.uk/ in Lockesbottom Kent if you want to really push the boat out.
Notice I like to eat?
If you go to the New Forest visit Lymington, and have lunch at http://www.lepoussin.co.uk/ near Lyndhurst fantastic.
Hmmmmm
Wales I love Snowdonia, and wandering around Betws-y-coed, but can't remeber the name of the restuarant at the end of the village in an old white pub....good though
Peak district is lovely too, but extremely busy in summer...and food isn't all that good around Matlock and the touristy bits

Walking along Princes Street in Edinburgh as dusk sets in with the castle sitting above you all lit up.
Sanna Bay in Ardnamurchan - if you could guarantee the weather you'd never go abroad.
The A68 up from south of Newcastle towards the Scottish Borders - fantastic road with some lovely scenery.
Wandering through the Shambles in York up towards the Minster on a day when the tourists aren't hogging the place
Stopping for a pint at the Glenelg in before catching the ferry across to Skye
Watching the sun set from the back garden on a Friday night from the comfort of a couple of cold G&T's - the Lammermuirs and Trapain Law being lit up by the low rays of the sun
I'll stop there
