Default Tunisia - Has anyone been, where to go?

Has anyone been to to Tunisia recently for a holiday?
Thinking of going there on holiday and wondering what resorts to look at or more importantly where to avoid.

The holiday will be in February, will it be hot ?
I've been to Tenerife in feb and that was hot, they both seem to be the same distance away from the equator.

Thanks
Kevin

My mate from our Glasgow office has just got back from a holiday there (she brought me back some sand from the Sahara in a minature JD bottle!). I will email her tomorrow then pass the details on!

yes stayed in port el kantoei. which is the nicest part with good hotels.dirt cheap i.e. paragliding,jet-ski and quad bike safari about £10 a go.food can be a bit iffy and i did get an upset stomache. not much nightlife.but value for money hard to beat.stayed in a five star hotel which was next to beach.

Stayed in Sousse (sp) a few years ago. TBH I would never go back, but it was cheap and warm at the time.

If you do go, be aware of going into the Medina's and walled cities, as they are a real tourist traps. The shop owners don't take 'no' for an answer, I tried to be very British with them, but eventually you have to be quite rude and tell them to '**** off'.

On the plus side we did a visit to the Sahara/camal ride which was fun, we also visited El Cem The film makers used it as the stage for the fight scenes in Gladiator which was also good as well.

Hope this helps a little.

was there about 5 years ago....cant remember where tbh. Did the Sahara thing which was great
The locals are not happy unless they are trying to rip you off. Even down to the shops within the hotel !!
Will repeat the warning about the food.
A good place to go and experience.

Yep, went there at Xmas the year before last. Agree that the markets are a total nightmare, if you don't like UK shopping then you're well ****ed, 'Don't take no for an answer'....they bl@@dy chase you down the street in droves!!!
Food is OK but guaranteed that you will spend 1 or 2 days in the loo & you are unlikely to have ever felt as ill in your life. 10 of us went & only 1 was OK (Cast iron gut?!). The reps say 'Local remedy from chemist is best IF you get a bit of a reaction from the mineral content in the water' & you all go 'We'll be OK - only drink beer', you soon realise that you should've gone straight to the chemist & got some in BEFORE you get ill
Camel Rides are a hoot though & there's usually Quad biking too. Sahara is a must just to have been. Found that anyone who wasn't trying to sell you something was actually very pleasant.
Beer was cheap & the hotels are quality for the money (Security guy hiding in the bushes at every one a bit disconcerting at night!), that's assuming it's still cheap to go. Temperatures were like late spring/early summer here on Xmas day so feb should be OK ish.
Best thing is you can say truthfully that you've been to Africa!
Sorry to not be more +ve

Package trip and when we arrived we were told 'of course this is a third world country' by the rep. Kinda missed that in the brouchure

Stay a Hammamet if I remember well enough. Ate tinned Tuna, got ripped off by French/Arabic speaking locals in tourist designated zones. Two hour transfer from the Airport to resort stopping to allow nauseous tourists to get out and throw up.

Avoid the beaches right near the hotels

On the positive side as has been side we could ring home and say we were in Africa! The are loads of Roman sites which lose their top notch items to the Capital in Tunis but if you bribe the local curator or archeaologist youcan get to march about in some pretty cool places. Sounds square but excellant.

Speak French to get on......reminded me of a trip to the seedy side of Marseille.

Sorry thats about it. I do have a guide book I won't be needing again if you want it!

Went to hammamet and stayed in a four star hotel. Was a great holiday. Food was great but don't eat out its tripe. Sightseeing isn't much cop but if you want to relax then its great. One word of advice- bring a few vodka/whisky bottles as the booze is a rip off as its a muslim country.

I went to hammamet about 6 years ago, it was absolutely cack

The first time somebody offers you 30 camels for the missus its quite amusing, but after a while it gets very boring!

food was crap!

I knew it was not going to be good when on the way to the hotel we passed some bloke going for a crap in the street

yeah its not bad, getting more geared towards tourism. be prepared to have it more a "travelling adventure" holiday rather just following the tourists to the tourist traps then its your own fault

go to Douz & go on a camel in the sahara.
go on a steam train ride through the desert valleys from douz to somewhere in algeria (make sure you turn back before crossing the boarder)
be prepared to haggle & be harse with them when bartering or telling them where to sod off.
dont take pictures of the locals, if so expect to have to pay a fee. expect everything to cost at least 1 Dinar.
Make sure you have loads of 1's cos youll need them, last thing you want is to have some typical "tourist 50's" when theyll want their 1 dont expect to ask for change
you WILL get harassed (it not bad or anything just to let you know if that sort of thing pees you off)
know how to work them, dont be an obvious tourist then its a cheap place.

got some great sunrise pics over the desert

Went once and never again. Terrible country and people IMO, spend your time and money elsewhere. Morrocco, Egypt, Mozambique, Kenya, RSA are all better destinations on the African Continent.
