HELP - Acoustic Guitar Classics Please...!
Looking for some inspiration please guys....
Need to learn some new stuff and it needs to be a bit more challenging than D, C and G
Must sound good sung with one or 2 acoustic's as myself and a long time jamming mate need to make the set a big bigger
Enjoyed learning Damien Rice's album 0 as some of the songs have some nice playing/vocals... especially Cannonball (before he's gone and jazzed it up)
Learned most of the usual suspects at some point or another:
Pink Floyd's Wish you were here, Is there anybody out there, Goodbye Blue Sky etc & the obligatory LZ's Stairway to Heaven
Nearly everything by the Chilli's but unfortunately anything other than Under the Bridge doesn't come over too well on an acoustic set ...
Eva Cassidy/David Gray/Paul Weller popular ones have been mostly covered (now off the Prozac )
Need some more upfilting tunes as don't want people with suicidal tendancies doing themselves in, in public
Personally feel that Radiohead High and Dry/Karma Police comes over really well, along with Aqualung Strange and Beautiful, Jet Move, The Jam Butterfly Collector, Supergrass Moving etc ie. most suit our voices and playing style ..
Would be really grateful of anything you can suggest that is both interesting to learn/play and familiar enough to entertain pub crowds...open to any suggestions.
We're both mid 30's...... so keep it real
What do you enjoy playing ?
Thanks
Si

I could have lied by the chilis comes over well (it was acoustic), as does soul 2 squeeze.
I like playing Tears in heaven, and also some eva cassidy songs would be quite good.
Extreme's more than words is cool too

Thanks Tony
As mentioned mate, I've done the Eva Cassidy thing (Songbird/Fields of Gold) and generally feel my voice is a bit of insult to her memory in comparison to her lovely voice
Agreed mate... all that guitar tapping..
Not a Clapton fan mate... we cover Hey Hey if there looks to be any 'bluesy' type people out there
Cheers Tony (I'll rethink some of the Chilli's )
Anyone else ... ?

Thank god the link's to Anji and not Angie (good site by the way...will check it out properly
Just when you said Stones I got a bit worried for a minute Should of mentioned that I cover Wild Horses and You can't always get what you want
I loved REM in my old student days ie. murmur/life's rich pageant/Green but they've lost the plot in the last few years IMHO
Keep these ideas coming please

I can see the confusion, especially as Anji is also spelled Angi
Another good one is Bruce Cockburn - If I had a Rocket Launcher (acoustic version). Not easy to learn at all.

Try any of John Mayall's material. He may be a piano jockey, but through the 60's he discovered most of this country's greatest guitarists

have you heard NickelCreek
some of the most inspiring acoustic music that you are every likely to hear. 2 lads and a lass, think they are only early 20's and play kinda modern blue grass, most of the percussion is them slapping the backs of the guitars
really really good

LOL.
I had that CD in my car for ages (1990 ?)
We had a little band back then, and I got to sing the Kate Pierson (sp?) part, which was not exactly "in my range" LOL
BTW, John Mayall is a very good tip, check it out. One of the founding fathers IMHO.
Also... RHCP ... try Venice Queen. It's doable with just a guitar, and a FG song.
The other suggestion was "I could have Lied"... hope this link works...

A few acoustic tunes I play with my pals
Cat Stevens
Wild Wood, Moonshadow, Father & Son
Counting Crowes
Mr Jones
Eagle Eye Cherry
Save Tonight (works well sung in octaves)
Don't laugh - but the Proclaimers one ("I would walk" etc) goes down brilliantly and the chorus works a treat for two.
Harry Nillsen - "Lime in the Coconut" is another classic, and great for making up songs over.

Venus - Shocking Blue
A goodess on a mountain top,
was burning like a silver flame.
The summit of beauty she was,
and Venus was her name.
She's got it, Yeah baby she's got it.
Well, I'm your Venus, I'm your fire at you desire.
Well, I'm your Venus, I'm your fire at you desire.
Her weapon were her crystal eyes,
making every man a man.
Black as a darknight she was,
got what no one else had.
--------------------------------------------------------------
The Mavericks - Dance The Night Away - by Raul Malo
The song has a 4/4 tempo, with a "Mexican" (Mariachi) feeling.
Speed: 142 beats (35-36 bars) per minute.
The chord progression is quite simple:
E B7 (repeat ad infinitum)
|: //// | //// :|
The bass plays a simple 4/4 pattern, the rhythm guitar plays straight
8th (shimmy-shimmy-shimmy-shimmy). A second rhythm guitar hits every 2
and 4, and there is plenty of horn stuff.
Verse, Chorus and Bridge all have the same turnaround of 16 bars (i.e. 8
times the above pattern).
INTRO: 4 bars rhythm guitar alone,
------ then 8 bars full rhythm section and horns
VERSE:
------
[E] Here comes my [B7] happiness a-[E]-gain, [B7]
[E] Right back to [B7] where it should have [E] been. [B7]
[E] 'Cause now she's [B7] gone and I am [E] free, [B7]
[E] And she can't [B7] do a thing to [E] me. [B7]
CHORUS:
-------
[E] I just wanna [B7] dance the night a-[E]-way [B7]
[E] With Senho-[B7]-ritas who can [E] sway. [B7]
[E] Right now to-[B7]-morrow's looking [E] bright, [B7]
[E] Just like the [B7] sunny morning [E] light. [B7]
BRIDGE:
-------
And [E] if you should [B7] see her, [E] please let her [B7] know
That I'm [E] well - [B7] as you can [E] tell. [B7]
And [E] if she should [B7] tell you, that [E] she wants me [B7] back,
Tell her [E] "No" - [B7] I gotta [E] go. [B7]
repeat CHORUS
1 instrumental turnaround (8 bars horn section, 8 bars guitar solo)
repeat BRIDGE
repeat CHORUS 2x
OUTRO: instrumental, 6 bars in progression, then:
------
E B7 E Eadd2
|: %... ../ | %... ../ :| %... ../ | %... / & |
where the chords are played short (staccato) and pronounced
Table of symbols:
. is a 8th note (chord)
/ is a 4th note (chord)
% is a 8th rest
& is a 4th rest
| denotes a new bar
(should be a vertical slash - hope it appears in your font)
|: :| is a pair of repetition marks
(whatever is between shall be repeated)

Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)
by Steve Harley And Cockney Rebel
Album :
"You've done it all
You've broken every code
And pulled the rebel to the floor
You've spoilt the game
No matter what you say
For only metal, what a bore
Blue eyes, blue eyes
How can you tell so many lies?
Come up and see me, make me smile
I'll do what you want, running wild
There's nothing left
All is gone and run away
Maybe you'll tarry for a while
It's just a test
A game for us to play
Win or lose, it's hard to smile
Resist, resist
It's from yourself you'll have to hide
Come up and see me to make me smile
I'll do what you want, running wild
There ain't no more
You've taken everything
From my belief in Mother Earth
Can you ignore my faith in everything?
'Cos I know what faith is
And what it's worth
Away, away
And don't say maybe you'll try
To come up and see me, make me smile
I'll do what you want, just running wild"

Some people I used to know did Rum and Coca Cola live. It was the best part of their set. Classic song:

(the MIDI file is rubbish BTW) Get hold of the Andrews Sisters version - recently copied in the Tropicana Adverts on TV.

UB the Mavericks one is also good for throwing 'who let the dogs out' line every now & then, my mate does it in his caberet duo , however sometimes when he does it the poor old slappers dancing end up going sitting back down, as they think its aimed at them

Get hold of some Michael Hedges stuff... a truly gifted musician.
I play quite a bit of Radiohead, you can find various 'unplugged' recordings on the net which will give you ideas for acoustic arrangements. Also chack out old MTV unplugged sessions of REM, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana etc.
