Depends on who you work for and what you do.
Upsides - good cash and loads of time off.
Downsides - working away from home a lot, weather/chopper delays possibility of working Xmas and new year if you get on the wrong rota.
John.

I work offshore
yes you do get Bummed but the Money is good
Try http://www.oilcareers.co.uk
but TBH the only work will be abroad as it stands now. The north sea is in decline with in the last month a reduction of 50% of the drilling personell in the feild that I work in.
That plus the job losses back in March makes the numbers out here down to a bare minimum.
It would help if you were a trade ( Instrument, Electrical, Mechanical ) or have a good backgroung in Process.
if you don't have any of that lot you can allways stick a broom up your a$$ and sweep the drill floor

Despite working for an oil service company, I've never been offshore - speaking to those who do, it either seems to suit or it doesn't. There are more jobs at http://www.hazelleng.comand http://www.oilandgasjobsearch.com.

Why not come on one of our courses:
www.tristar-oilfield-services.co.uk
Wireline, Coiled Tubing, Well Testing Drilling, IWCF Well Control.
Course contents are in PDF on the downloads section.
Like most jobs, offshore workers don't start on a great deal of pay. But it is the amount of days offshore and bonus money that makes it worthwhile. But you could sit on your **** for months with no work with certain companies.
Once you've got several years experience for say a well services engineer you would be looking at about £45k a year basic plus about £160 a day bonus.
Regards
Mark

I seen him/her in Scatsta
that must have been a bit wierd working for him when he was going through the change. Guys I spoken too say he would start crying for no reason when on the hormones
well only tomorrow to go then I'm back home for two weeks lets hope the weather is nice.

Yeah it was Scatsta I saw him/her at, before he/she went through the change apparently the security checks were carried out by men on the bottom half and women on the top half
I live at the end of the Scatsta runway, worked @ SVT for 20 yrs then they moved my job to Dyce I travel down from Scatsta every Monday and back at the weekends - it's a job though..Look out the left hand side of the plane if you're taking off in the southerly direction and you might spot my STi3 - mind you it's tucked away in the garage this week

Been working as a Production Tech on BP's Miller platform for almost a year now and have to say i really enjoy it. Have just signed as competent in my first area (of four) on the platform and with manning the way it is it looks as though i'll be responsible for the area come next trip (currently on 3 weeks off ).
I'm still a designate at the moment (have just come out of 3 year apprenticeship at the Grangemouth refinery) but even now the money is excellent. I'm 22 and there's guys who've just finished their apprenticeships in the same year as me who're still 19 on 35k+.
The work isn't too taxing. For me the hardest thing is changing over to dayshift after 7 nightshifts.
I'm still finding my feet as such but have seen a turnover of HSE advisers on Miller already (most jumping ship for the Clair project). If you don't already have it i believe the NEBOSH qualification is the main requirement for HSE staff. I've also heard that putting yourself through the RGIT training is a good way to sell yourself if you have no offshore experience.
