could I take my own with my digital camera to send off for a new passport or do I have to go to one of those photo booth thingies.

The term "passport photo" relates to the follwing criteria...
- dimensions of photo
- colour of background
- exact border dimensions
Providing you could replicate these as per the requisite sizes, then I see no problem as to doing it yourself.
Having said that, its much less hassle to just spend £3 next time you're in the Post Office or Asda!

taken from http://www.ukpa.gov.uk/_2_howtoapply/2_photographs.asp
- Taken against a light background (either white, off white, cream or light grey so that your features are distinguishable and contrast against the background)
- Clear and of good quality.
- Identical.
- Printed on normal photographic paper.
- Unmounted 45mm x 35mm in size.
- Full face (without sunglasses and normally without a hat unless the applicant wears a head covering due to their religious beliefs or their ethnic background, which is acceptable)

Used a digital camera for my sons passport photo, he is one and it took many goes to get a suitable picture. Would have cost thousands to try and do this in a photo booth.
Anyway, picture was not questioned and he now has his own passport.
