I have an opinion that domestic cats shouldn't be released to roam. An opinion that I have backed up on countless occasions with scientific facts and first-hand information. Usually some cat owners let their emotions get the better of them and become hysterical, causing general unpleasantness and ultimately the thread to be locked.
I now try and keep such discussions to threads started with that specific issue in mind to avoid every single cat thread being locked, however there is always at least one "cat activist" trying to stir things up (*cough* tiggers)!

Well since its your thread and you are inviting me (never invite a vampire into your house by the way
) I shall oblige....
Basically the issue I have is that of responsibility for an animal that is, for all intents and purposes, realeased into the wild. The problem being that when it comes to legal responsibility for damage that animal does and the definition of whether it is a domestic pet or a non-indigenous species roaming wild the law is blurred.
The following thread problably cover the crux of it for me:-
http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showpost....6&postcount=68
We have also covered the biological aspects of it including damage to native songbird and rodent population and the danger of parasite (toxoplasma gondii) propagation to human beings and associated health and behaviour problems as a result. I can't find all the threads unfortunately but the info is in my brain's cache for fast recall should you need it!

Damage to property, for me, consists of fish missing from my pond, paw/claw marks on the car and faeces on the garden.
The car is now in a garage, I have netting over the pond (to be fair blame can be attributable to herons too, but at least they are an indigenous species!) but I havn't found a way around the pooh yet! (ever run over cat **** with a hover mower? - not nice!)

I would much rather not have to claim for damage in the first place.
My opinion, as you know, is that cats should not be left to roam free as is the situation for dogs. To those who say that cats *must* roam free I would suggest that, if that were the case, then they are not a suitable animal to keep as a domestic pet.
I see where your coming from m8,ive had similar arguments with a neighbour down the road who's dog had a fetish for my driveway and would crap all over it everytime he walked past
luckily im in a position with my cat where in the 30 houses around mine there must be 20 cats
p.s dont move onto my road m8 you would have a heart attack within a week lol

I just wonder what would happen if the tables were turned, hypothetically
.... if I moved my mixed shoal of venezuelan and amazonian piranha into my pond and someones cat got eaten do you think they would accept the explanation "oh, thats what they do"? Anyway, thanks for your receptive and understanding attitude, you could teach a few on here a thing or two!

Believe it or not I have actually received several threats from these discussions, including a death threat! There's nowt so strange as people!

Genuinely sorry mate - I really wouldn't have posted my lighthearted comment in this thread if I knew things had gone that far.
