Too many rules?
One of the great things about ScoobyNet is the fairness of moderation and that we aren't over-run with rules, regulations and restrictions on what we can and cannot do.
I appreciate we have forum guidelines but to be fair, they are mostly common sense.
I was reading through another forum and happened to read their rules for posting items for sale -:
Rules:
1. Please combine numerous 'for sale' or 'want to buy' items into one post. More than 2 posts by an individual member posting either a 'for sale' item or a 'want to buy' post will result in the thread being locked. If the member persists, further posts will be deleted without notice.
I appreciate that this is so that the board isn't over run with adverts, but it makes things much simpler if it could be one item - one post
2. You cannot charge VAT on top of an already stated price, charging VAT would imply that you are a business and thread will be removed.
goes without saying
3. You cannot sell something you do not have in your immediate possession.
why? if you are awaiting delivery of an item, and decide to sell it on prior to receipt, whats the problem?
4. Alcohol, tobacco, drugs/pharmaceuticals, or weapon sales/trade are strictly prohibited.
Boooooo!
5. A sale thread's initial post must state a firm asking price. Of course you can haggle, but an initial price must be stated. A post simply asking for offers or conducting a PM auction is not allowed. A price must be stated in initial post.
Again, why? whats the problem with asking for offers???
6. Leave an email address for contacting.
Why? The seller may not want their email account (work etc) being bombarded with buyers emails. We have pm's and can post alternative contact details if pm does not suffice
7. The thread CANNOT be a link to an Ebay auction (or any similar off-site auction), or a jump page that leads to an Ebay auction. The CTROF Classifieds space is not meant to be used to gather attention to a potential bidding war.
An old ScoobyNet bone of contention which seems to have relaxed of late
8. "Thread crapping" will not be tolerated. If you do not intend to buy and have nothing positive to add to the sale, refrain from posting in the thread. This includes stating "the price is too high", if you think the price is too high, inform seller via the PM service or an E-MAIL. If you think your post may be in any way interpreted as being "thread crapping" then take the safer route and send your message via PM or E-MAIL to the seller.
The only one I agree with! ScobbyNet is particularily bad for this
9. Most importantly, buyer and seller beware.
Duh
10. One bump a day please....pick your time wisely.
Oooooh. This would kill the non fully paid up SN members! How many threads have you seen that are 10 pages long with "bttt"
11. Once a sale has been completed it is the sellers duty to change the title of the thread to have "SOLD" at the beginning or end of the title.
Fair enough
Now, I appreciate that some of these suggestions are sensible, but what I dislike is the rule after rule.
I know that they are for the benefit of the board overall, but SN doesn't have a rule enforcement like this and it does not suffer as a consequence.
It seems that it is following society in general with telling us what we can and cannot do.
Next they'll be telling you when you can change your car!

What a strange rant coming from a copper...
To many rules, you can say that again.
Remind me how many millimeters do my registration letters have to be ?

The rules CLEARLY STATE "one bump per day, pick your time wisely", yet you lot are blatantly breaking the "rules".
Do you have ANY idea the strain this is putting on the server with all these "bttt's"?
FFS, next you lot will be asking for "offers" in for sale adverts........ Anarchists!

Sonic,
Offers aren't allowed, and if you wish a reply, you are supposed to post your email address!
Sheesh!
I was going to post an eBay link to a very good Rule Book, but it'll get "deleted without notice"
